An avalanche was reported in the area of Guardsman Pass on Saturday, but it was not clear early in the week whether the slide occurred on a tract of high-altitude open space owned by City Hall or whether the snow came to a stop on the land.

The Utah Avalanche Center said the slide occurred at an elevation of 9,300 feet and was triggered by a snowmobiler. The slide was up to 40 feet wide and up to 8 inches deep, according to a report posted to the center’s list of avalanches. The report did not specify a length of the avalanche.

The posting said a snowmobiler “was breaking trail on Guardsman Road” before turning around at the Bloods Lake trailhead. The snowmobiler “found he had triggered an avalanche,” the report said.

Bloods Lake is one of the trailheads accessing the City Hall land. Park City officials on Tuesday were unable to confirm whether the avalanche occurred on the municipal open space. The location identified on the Utah Avalanche Center report is on the municipal land, though, City Hall said.

The Utah Avalanche Center said the danger of slides was considerable in the Salt Lake region and the Uinta Mountains, the two areas that cover the Park City area and surrounding Summit County, on Tuesday.

The skiers and snowboarders who will head to Park City Mountain starting later in November likely understand the parking situation on the Park City side of the resort needed to change.

It had, over the years, become a challenge for everyone. Those headed to the slopes filled the lots on the busiest days, meaning the late arrivals needed to find somewhere else to park. Perhaps they chose neighborhood streets close to the resort, the Park City Library lot or the large lots along Park Avenue that are supposed to be designated for customers of those businesses.

It was untenable, and Park City Mountain responded with a drastic solution. The introduction of the paid parking and reservation systems for the upcoming ski season was an extraordinary move by the resort. Park City Mountain and the skiers and snowboarders realize the alteration to the parking operations is a fundamental change to the resort experience and an added cost to a recreational activity that is already expensive.

It is now time for those who ski and snowboard there to accept the decision by Park City Mountain. Paying to park, carpooling to the resort to share the cost of parking or taking a bus at no cost will be some of the options once the paid parking starts. We hope the new parking system will not lead people to select another option: abandoning a resort that has proven itself to be a name brand in North American skiing and one that retains that status even after the troubles of the 2021-2022 winter.

The paid parking and reservations Park City Mountain will introduce will not change the vast terrain of the resort. Powder days in the bowls will still be a superb skiing and snowboarding experience regardless of any new parking program. And the base areas or Main Street beckon at the end of the day.

The crowds over the decades have always seemed to find their way to Park City Mountain. They became more difficult to manage as the tourism industry in the community, not just at Park City Mountain, grew larger.

As the ski season arrives, there must be an understanding that a change was necessary in the operations at the resort base. The paid parking and reservations, in a way, drive that home.

The Park City Police Department last week received a series of complaints about parking issues, or in one case an abandoned vehicle, a standard sort of call for the agency.

In one of the cases, on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 9:48 a.m., a vehicle was left at the intersection of Park Avenue and Heber Avenue, in a place where the curb is red. The vehicle was also at a stop sign, the police said. The driver returned and “was given a stern talking” to, according to the police.

Some of the other cases included:

• on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7:54 p.m., a vehicle was seen without anybody inside at a fire hydrant on Main Street. Public police logs did not provide details of any enforcement action.

•  on Nov. 4 at 6:58 a.m., the police received a complaint about an abandoned vehicle that was left “in the middle of the road” on Marsac Avenue south of Old Town. The vehicle was “blocking people from getting to work,” the police were told. The person who contacted the police also said the road was not plowed and was “extra icy,” according to police logs.

• on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 2:01 p.m., a vehicle was reportedly left in an intersection somewhere along Park Avenue. The location also blocked a driveway, the police were told.

On Sunday, Nov. 6 at at 2:02 p.m., the police received a report of a driver who might have been intoxicated or, possibly, drowsy on Kearns Boulevard close to the Park City School District campus.The police attempted to locate the driver, but public police logs did not provide details.

Someone found a wallet on Kearns Boulevard close to a restaurant at 1:41 p.m. and contacted the police. Public police logs indicated the wallet was found in the snow.

The police at 1:13 a.m. received a report about a taxi driver who, the department was told, refused to take someone to a hotel. The call was logged at the intersection of Main Street and Heber Avenue. The person was “intoxicated and said he doesn’t want to pay the” fare, according to police logs. The Police Department described the circumstances as suspicious.

On Saturday, Nov. 5 at 11:15 a.m., unspecified debris was reported in the road along S.R. 224. The police said the debris created a traffic hazard.

A pickup truck and an excavator reportedly blocked the road on Ontario Avenue at 10:03 a.m. They were apparently south of the vehicle of the person who contacted the police. The department classified the case as a parking problem.

A police officer at 12:21 a.m. stopped a driver in the area of Park Avenue and Iron Horse Drive after observing the vehicle’s taillights were not illuminated.

On Friday, Nov. 4 at 6:59 p.m., three men were reportedly ordered out of a pool on Deer Valley Drive. The case involved suspected trespassing, the police said.

A water line broke in a Prospector Avenue building at 10:34 a.m. Public police logs did not provide details.

The Police Department at 9:39 a.m. received a complaint about a construction firm’s heavy machinery in the area of Ontario Avenue and Marsac Avenue. The heavy machinery blocked “all the driveways,” according to police logs.

On Thursday, Nov. 3 at 5:11 p.m., a vehicle reportedly hit a building on Prospector Avenue while driving in reverse. The police said the case involved property damage, but the logs did not provide details.

On Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 7:41 p.m., a driver hit a deer in the area of the intersection of Marsac Avenue and Hawkeye Place. The deer left, the police said.

A fire in a Dumpster was reported at the intersection of Park Avenue and 8th Street at 5:59 p.m.

Someone found a wallet on Prospector Avenue and contacted the police at 4:22 p.m.

A suspected drunken driving case was reported at 12:02 a.m. at the intersection of Park Avenue and 8th Street. Public police logs did not provide details.

On Monday, Oct. 31 at 1:12 p.m., a person was suspected of intoxication at the Old Town transit center. Public police logs did not provide details.

It is time to head to the mailbox instead of the voting booth.

Election Day is Tuesday and those with ballots still on the kitchen table or in a pile of unopened mail need to make sure they fill them out and then either put them in the mail or deposit them in a drop box by the deadline.

Every election is, of course, critical to the future of a community, whether it be a city, a county, a state or a country. The various ballots in Summit County this year include everything from school boards in small districts to a hotly contested seat in the U.S. Senate.

It can be easy to decide not to even fill out a ballot in a midterm election like the one in 2022. The White House will not be decided, nor will municipal offices in communities across Summit County that are closest to the populace.

That is inaccurate thinking. The offices up and down the ballot this year are all critical to the future of Park City and the rest of Summit County. There will be Summit County Council seats decided, and the winners will help chart the course of growth in the Snyderville Basin. There will be state Legislature posts decided as well, and those winners will have influence on traffic and transportation throughout Summit County. And the Senate and House of Representatives contests will determine who represents your interests in Washington, including in regards to the economy and the environment.

It may be a midterm election, but it is clear much is riding on the results.

Voters in Summit County still have a variety of options to ensure their ballot arrives at the County Courthouse on time. The postmark deadline is Monday. There are drop boxes in 10 locations spread between Park City, the Basin, North Summit and South Summit. Ballots can be left in the drop boxes up until 8 p.m. on Election Day. You may also vote in person on Tuesday at voting centers that will be opened in the Marsac Building, City Hall in Coalville and the Kimball Junction and Kamas locations of the Summit County Library.

Whenever, wherever and however someone votes is not the relevant point. The relevant point is that someone indeed votes.

It was during the heart of the most recent ski season when Mike Goar, then the top staffer at Park City Mountain, appeared at the Marsac Building to discuss the state of the ski season with Park City’s elected officials.

The February meeting was tense. There had already been a litany of complaints about operations during the ski season, and the mayor and Park City Council, as well as the community, wanted answers and assurances. There was only so much that the Park City Mountain leadership could offer, though.

With the next ski season just weeks away, the current top staffer at Park City Mountain, Deirdra Walsh, is preparing to make her own appearance at the Marsac Building. The meeting on Thursday between Walsh and the elected officials is an important one even if it is designed as a presentation about the ski season rather than a detailed dialogue between the resort and City Hall about the winter.

Walsh will likely address the various steps Park City Mountain has taken as it attempts to better control the crowds, the traffic and improve the broader operations. Paid parking on the Park City side of the resort and a limit on sales of lift tickets are the highlights.

But the work to date, everyone must realize, amounts to a tabletop exercise. It will not be until the ski season, and then not until the crowds arrive, before the community will realize whether the work of Park City Mountain and City Hall is effective in managing the masses that are expected in the winter.

Walsh can offer assurances that paid parking will reduce traffic and the limit on lift tickets will alleviate congestion on the slopes, but those assurances would merely be projections. City Hall officials can offer the community the assurance they have devised a plan to address skier parking in the area of Main Street, but any such statement would be untested.

The leader of Deer Valley Resort, Todd Bennett, is also set to appear at the meeting on Thursday to discuss the upcoming season there, although any issues at Deer Valley have been far overshadowed by those at Park City Mountain.We expect the meeting on Thursday will not be marked by the tensions of the one in February. And we also hope the apparent progress by all sides since the 2021-2022 ski season will eliminate the possibility of a February-like gathering of disgruntled Parkites in the coming February.

The Park City Police Department last weekend stopped a driver who, the agency described, was not paying full attention to the road.

The traffic stop was reported on Main Street on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 9:41 p.m. A police officer pulled over the driver after observing that the person’s phone was attached to the vehicle’s windshield. The person was watching online videos while he was driving, the police said.

Public police logs did not provide details about whether the person received a warning or a ticket.

Other incidents reported to the Police Department last week included:

On Sunday, Oct. 30 at 11:30 a.m., a person who was reported to be intoxicated left a restaurant on Bonanza Drive.

The police at 10:58 a.m. received a report of a vehicle that was left in a designated spot on the 500 block of Main Street without permission.

The Police Department at 1:17 a.m. were told of “very loud” neighbors on Woodbine Way. They were drinking and having a party, the police were told. The police logged the case as suspected disturbing the peace.

On Saturday, Oct. 29 at at 11:15 p.m., a party, described as “huge” and “very loud” was reported somewhere along Aerie Drive. The person who contacted the police was unsure how many people were there. The police classified the case as suspected disturbing the peace.

The police at 3:17 p.m. received a complaint about a driver who was described as reckless on Deer Valley Drive. The police were told the driver was flashing the lights and failing to use turn signals. The driver nearly struck other vehicles, the police were told.

Someone at 12 p.m. reported drivers left vehicles on a sidewalk on Meadows Drive.

The Police Department at 11:36 a.m. was told of a natural gas scent and a hissing noise on Ontario Avenue. The location was at a construction site, the police were told.

On Friday, Oct. 28 at 11:29 p.m., the police received a complaint from someone on Empire Avenue saying a neighbor’s music was loud. The police logged the case as suspected disturbing the peace.

The police at 9:06 p.m. were told of two people who were ordered out of a Main Street nightclub earlier in the evening and attempted to enter two other places before they were denied. The two “keep coming back” to one of the nightclubs wanting entry, the police were told.

A semi truck stalled on Marsac Avenue in the area of the Marsac Building at 9:55 a.m.

The Police Department at 9:48 a.m. was told of debris in the road between the southbound lanes of S.R. 224 in the area of the McPolin Farm. The police were told there was a cooler in the road and indicated it created a traffic hazard.

A hit-and-run traffic accident was reported on Main Street at 9:33 a.m. The incident occurred the day before, the police were told.

On Thursday, Oct. 27 at 9:38 p.m., the police received a complaint from someone on Calumet Circle about a neighbor who plays the drums. The person told the police the drumming makes it difficult to sleep. The police logged the case as suspected disturbing the peace.

Someone on Moray Court at 6:01 p.m. reported damage to the yard, indicating it appeared that a “truck drove on her lawn and tore up the yard,” according to police logs. The Police Department described the circumstances as suspicious.

On Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 6:18 p.m., the police received a report of a burst water line on Butch Cassidy Court. The break apparently occurred in a yard and there was “a lot of water flowing into the street,” the police were told.

A hit-and-run traffic accident was reported on Norfolk Avenue at 2:53 p.m. The police were told the damage occurred two days prior to the report when a driver backed into a vehicle and left.

A hit-and-run traffic accident was reported at 11:38 a.m. on Heber Avenue. The person who reported the case was at the scene, the police said. Police logs did not provide details.

On Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 4:46 p.m., an elevator rescue was reported at the Park City Library. Public police logs did not provide details.

On Monday, Oct. 24 at 2:13 p.m,, the police were told of a driver hitting a stop sign at one of the intersections of. Meadows Drive and American Saddler Drive. The sign was toppled and vehicle parts were seen, the police were told.
