For many visitors, Park City is synonymous with deep powder and ski lifts. But ask a local their favorite season, and many will tell you it’s fall.

During September and October, the Wasatch Back transforms into a watercolor painting of shimmering gold, fiery orange, and crimson as thousands of quaking aspens put on one of the West’s most spectacular color displays. 

Crisp mornings give way to sunny afternoons, and hiking and biking trails are less congested. It’s the perfect season to bring out the hiking boots and fishing waders or head out on a scenic drive.

Chase the Colors

One of the greatest joys of autumn is simply getting behind the wheel.

Just 20 minutes east of Park City, Mirror Lake Scenic Byway begins in Kamas and winds 42 miles through the Uinta Mountains before reaching the Wyoming border. Along the way, drivers climb to Bald Mountain Pass at 10,715 feet—the highest paved road in Utah—passing alpine lakes, waterfalls, forests, and panoramic overlooks. The route typically remains open until snowfall arrives, making fall one of the best times to experience its brilliant foliage. 

Closer to town, Guardsman Pass offers another unforgettable drive. The winding mountain road connects Park City with Big Cottonwood Canyon and Midway, weaving through dense aspen groves that glow gold during peak color season. Pullouts provide sweeping views of both the Heber Valley and the Salt Lake Valley, making it a favorite destination for photographers and leaf peepers alike. 

Hike and Bike in Mountain Splendor 

Fall is arguably the finest hiking and biking season around the Wasatch Back.

Cooler temperatures make longer adventures more comfortable, while colorful hillsides create an ever-changing backdrop. Popular trails such as Bloods Lake, Bonanza Flat, Armstrong Trail, Mid Mountain Trail, and Rob’s Trail showcase spectacular aspen forests without the summer crowds.

For families seeking shorter outings, nearby Silver Lake and the boardwalks around Guardsman Pass provide easy access to vibrant foliage and incredible mountain scenery. Moose and other wildlife sightings are typically plentiful—just remember to admire them from afar.

Cast a Fly

Autumn also marks one of the best times to experience Utah’s world-renowned fly fishing.

Just minutes from Park City, the Middle Provo River—designated a Blue-Ribbon trout fishery—offers exceptional opportunities for anglers of every skill level. Fed by the cool waters below Jordanelle Reservoir, the river maintains ideal temperatures throughout fall, when trout actively feed before winter arrives.

The nearby Weber River and Upper Provo provide equally scenic alternatives, while guided trips make it easy for beginners to learn casting techniques, insect identification, and river strategy.

Saddle Up

Few experiences capture the spirit of the American West quite like horseback riding beneath a canopy of golden aspens.

Several local outfitters offer guided rides through mountain meadows, forests, and alpine terrain where wildlife sightings are common and panoramic views stretch for miles.

Even first-time riders can comfortably experience the season from the saddle, making horseback adventures one of the most memorable ways to immerse yourself in the changing landscape. 

Celebrate Harvest Season

Fall isn’t complete without embracing the region’s agricultural roots.

The Heber Valley, Kamas Valley, and surrounding communities come alive with harvest festivals, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, farmers markets, and roadside farm stands overflowing with apples, squash, pumpkins, sweet corn, local honey, and fresh cider.

Savor the Summit 

The annual Savor the Summit event on Park City’s historic Main Street took place on June 27. Dozens of participating restaurants served curated multi-course menus and craft cocktails in this outdoor dinner party with communal tables that stretched down Main Street. 

Independence Day

America marked the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026, and patriotic events across the Wasatch Back spanned the weekend. From parades and pancake breakfasts to concerts and potlucks, Independence Day was celebrated on Park City’s historic Main Street and at the multi-day Forum Fest which culminated in a drone show each evening.

“Canopy sits at the very top of the lifestyle portfolio within Hilton before you get into luxury hotels,” explains Kat Barrett, Vice President of Commercial Services of Canopy’s development group Extell. “There are a lot of luxury products here, but there are plenty of people who want to come and maybe can’t afford the luxury product or were looking for something a little more modern and less alpine traditional.” 

A Modern Take on Mountain Living

From the moment guests arrive, it’s clear this isn’t a traditional ski resort lodge.

Canopy embraces what its designers describe as a “modern alpine retreat.” Warm oak finishes, geometric artwork, rich textures, retro-inspired furnishings, and cheerful hues of mustard, orange, teal, and blue create an atmosphere that feels stylish and welcoming.

“We wanted it to feel lived in but new all at the same time,” says Barrett. “There are so many textures throughout the building. It feels warm. It feels inviting. It’s not sterile.”

The interiors, created by DLR Group with a curated art package, celebrate Park City’s history through subtle storytelling. Decorative metal screens evoke mining equipment while sculptural ceiling treatments resemble falling snow. One dramatic wall installation is inspired by an aerial view of Mayflower Mountain’s ski trails, transformed into contemporary artwork. Throughout the hallways, whimsical and geometric pieces encourage guests to pause, explore, and even photograph the spaces themselves. 

Designed Around Discovery

Rather than one expansive lobby, Canopy creates a series of intimate gathering spaces.

A dramatic, double-sided fireplace anchors the arrival experience, connecting the lobby with a comfortable café serving coffee, pastries, sandwiches, and grab-and-go offerings throughout the day with expansive views of Jordanelle Reservoir. Beyond that, guests discover additional lounges, reading nooks, conversation areas, and restaurants tucked throughout the hotel.

“It takes you on a journey,” Barrett continues. “You walk in, see the fireplace, but then there’s fun stuff behind it that makes you want to explore.”

That philosophy reflects a growing hospitality trend influencing residential design as well.

“People’s interior design choices at home are starting to take a lot of inspiration from lifestyle hotels,” she says. “Instead of one big open space, people are carving out smaller places for conversation, dining, and gathering.”

Italian Comfort Meets Mountain Tastes

Food plays a central role in the Canopy experience.

The hotel’s signature Italian restaurant embraces approachable, comforting cuisine inspired by homes across Italy rather than one specific region. Executive Chef Scott Rackliff, whose résumé includes Eleven Madison Park, Daniel Boulud’s restaurant group, and luxury resorts in California, describes the concept as “the whole country” of Italy.

“It’s that Italian comfort,” Rackliff says. “Kind of like eating at grandma’s house. Super approachable, super simple.”

House-made pastas, handcrafted pizzas baked in an outdoor oven, meatball smash burgers, fresh bolognese, branzino, pork from Niman Ranch, and locally sourced ingredients headline the menu. Utah suppliers—including Wasatch Meats, Ballard Farms, Beehive Cheese, and Heber Valley Artisan Cheese—reflect the property’s commitment to regional partnerships. 

Chef Rackliff’s favorite dishes? “The bolognese,” he answers without hesitation, along with the meatball smash burger and a comforting Wagyu Salisbury steak served with mashed potatoes and charred carrots.

Rooms That Feel Like Home

The hotel’s 180 guest rooms continue the storytelling.

Every Canopy property incorporates a signature bed canopy inspired by its location. Here, the leather-accented headboards reference backpack straps—a nod to hiking, skiing, and mountain adventure.

“One of the things that’s really important in the Canopy branding is a sense of home,” Barrett explains. “You’ve essentially come into our home, and we’re going to show you all the things that are best locally.”

Guest rooms feature plush seating, locally inspired artwork, oversized workspaces, complimentary beverages, refillable Canopy-branded water bottles, and views of either Jordanelle Reservoir or Deer Valley’s mountains.

“Every single room has a view,” Barrett remarks, pointing out the long and narrow layout of the hotel on the mountainside. “You’re guaranteed either a view of Jordanelle or a view of the mountains.”

The amenities at Canopy Deer Valley are four-season focused and extend well beyond skiing.

For families, a technology-focused game room offers PlayStation consoles, large-screen televisions, and flexible gathering areas.

Promontory recently announced the appointment of Chef Phelix Gardner as Chef de Cuisine of Sage, the property’s Italian restaurant inside The Hills clubhouse. 

Born in Spain and classically trained, Gardner brings his Mediterranean-inspired perspective and more than three decades of culinary and hospitality experience to Promontory.

Swiss Days Festival

September 4-5
The annual Swiss Days Festival returns over Labor Day weekend to the picturesque alpine village of Midway in Heber Valley to celebrate the traditions and culture established by Midway’s Swiss pioneers.

Swiss Days showcases Midway’s Swiss heritage with two days filled with artisan shopping, alpine cuisine, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities. Attendees can enjoy traditional Swiss favorites alongside local food vendors, live performances, a Saturday morning parade, Swiss Days 10K, and a popular chuckwagon breakfast. New to the festival this year, a barbecue dinner has been added to Saturday activities.

“Swiss Days showcases everything residents and visitors love about Midway,” explains volunteer Aja Mills. “It’s about authentic heritage, welcoming small-town hospitality, supporting small businesses, and the breathtaking surrounding mountain scenery.

More than 180 juried artisans and boutique vendors fill the open-air market set up at Midway Town Square with handcrafted goods, fine art, jewelry, home décor, specialty foods, apparel, and one-of-a-kind gifts.

The seventh annual Park City Wine Festival features a weekend of wine events where guests can mix and mingle with winemakers and vintners, enjoy expertly paired lunches and dinners, and take a paired wine hike. 

The signature event is The Grand Tasting. Three sessions (one Friday and two Saturday sessions) allow attendees to sample from 200+ wines while taking in scenic mountain views, listening to live music, and enjoying food from Encanto, Big Dipper, and The Grazing Feather.

Today, the world’s most luxurious delicacy has found a fitting home nearly 7,000 feet above sea level, where skiers swap boots for bubbles and locals are embracing roe with robust enthusiasm.

Park City’s growing appetite for caviar is becoming part of the resort town’s lifestyle.

Walk into any restaurant in Deer Valley or pull up a seat at one of Main Street’s best restaurants, and chances are you’ll find caviar featured somewhere on the menu. Whether served traditionally atop blinis with crème fraîche, layered onto seafood towers, paired with champagne, or enjoyed as an après bump, the delicacy is fueling Park City’s evolving dining scene.

“Demand for caviar continues to grow as more people discover that it doesn’t have to be reserved for milestone celebrations,” says Meredith Marks, founder of Meredith Marks Caviar and an original cast member of Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. “When I launched Meredith Marks Caviar, I wanted to create a luxury consumable. There weren’t many modern luxury caviar brands in the space, and I saw an opportunity to introduce it to a new generation of consumers.”

From Exclusive to Everyday 

Nationally, caviar has experienced a remarkable renaissance. Once viewed as intimidating or reserved for special occasions, today’s diners are embracing it as an approachable luxury—an experience built on edible memories. Celebrities, chefs, and influencers have helped fuel its popularity, showcasing everything from caviar-topped potato chips to indulgent burger pairings.

Park City has embraced the movement. Chefs are using caviar to elevate familiar dishes and discerning travelers (and locals) are stepping up to the table.

Deer Valley’s Caviar Culture

Across Deer Valley properties in East Village and mid-mountain, caviar is a natural extension of the resort’s culinary philosophy.

Sophisticated dining has long been part of Deer Valley’s reputation, and today, guests can enjoy seafood towers, oysters, shellfish, and caviar across several Deer Valley dining venues. 

“The best caviar isn’t defined by the tin; it’s defined by the people you’re sharing it with and the setting around you,” explains Jacob Musyt, vice president of food and beverage at Deer Valley Resort. “Chute Eleven just happens to be one of the best places to do both.”

The resort sells the most caviar at Chute Eleven, a 21+ slopeside yurt located outside the Empire Canyon Lodge during ski season. Try the lobster caviar grilled cheese or add a tin of caviar to a seafood tower. 

Head to Deer Valley’s mid-mountain to experience European hospitality celebrated alpine style with a dollop of roe. 

At The Hirsch inside Goldener Hirsch, guests have always enjoyed the Old-World charm of the dining room that’s been recently reimagined but still preserves its European heritage.

Here, you’ll find one of the most creative caviar presentations on the bar menu, featuring a potato rosti (a Swiss potato cake) topped with braised red cabbage, crème fraîche and Ossetra caviar.

Next door, Stein Eriksen Lodge, Utah’s longest-running Forbes Five-Star hotel, serves up Maine lobster rolls at the Troll Hallen Lounge with Osetra caviar, black garlic, and lettuce.

And in East Village, the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley illustrates caviar’s changing image.

Last season, the resort introduced a dedicated après experience at their Snowspell lounge featuring Champagne, DJs, and a curated caviar tasting. Executive Chef Viktor Merenyi developed a caviar flight designed for everyone from first-time tasters to seasoned aficionados. The hotel has since expanded caviar offerings to Remington Hall menus. 

French Flair Meets Fine Roe

At Le Dépôt Brasserie on Main Street, James Beard Award-winning Chef Galen Zamarra’s Parisian-style brasserie offers classic French cuisine alongside one of Main Street’s most elegant bar menus.

There, guests can order Paddlefish caviar served traditionally with housemade potato chips, crème fraîche, chives, and shallots—bites that pair naturally with Champagne or one of the restaurant’s French wines. 

“We use Paddlefish Caviar from American Caviar that’s wild caught and very sustainable,” says Zamarra.

Once ski season begins, they’ll also add farmed sturgeon Kaluga Caviar from Solex.

Meredith Marks Caviar Comes to the Table

For Marks, caviar fits naturally into Park City’s sophisticated yet relaxed culture.

Utah is famous for its mountain trails, red rock landscapes, and iconic national parks. But for many visitors, another part of the state sparks curiosity: its liquor laws.

Ask a local—or anyone who has tried ordering a drink in a restaurant here—and you’ll likely hear a story or two about Utah’s approach to adult beverages. From regulations surrounding when guests can be served cocktails to the amount of alcohol in various beers, the rules can seem a little puzzling at first glance.

The good news? Utah’s alcohol laws are far easier to navigate than their reputation suggests.

The legal age to purchase and consume alcohol is 21, and visitors are legally required to show a government-issued photo ID when entering bars or purchasing alcoholic beverages. In fact, everyone is required to present identification to enter a bar, regardless of age, so children, including infants, are not permitted inside bars.

Dining out with a drink is fairly straightforward. Restaurants with full-service liquor licenses can serve alcohol, but guests are expected to have a genuine intent to dine. While you can order a cocktail, beer, or glass of wine before placing your food order, establishments must ensure that alcohol service is paired with food service. Some establishments may also hold a beer-only license.

Utah’s thriving craft beverage scene also offers plenty of opportunities to sample local flavors. Most distilleries, breweries, and cideries hold licenses that allow them to sell their own products directly to customers during business hours, making tastings and take-home purchases easy.

While liquor, wine, and many spirits are primarily sold through state-run liquor stores, note that these stores are closed on Sundays and state and federal holidays so plan ahead if you’re stocking a vacation rental or preparing for a weekend gathering—particularly in July. 

Beer lovers can rejoice that beer containing up to 5% alcohol by volume (ABV) is readily available in grocery and convenience stores and those beverages can now be included in curbside pickup orders, provided proper age verification and security measures are in place. For stronger beers, wines, and spirits, state liquor stores remain the primary retail option.

Behind the regulations is a beverage culture that has evolved dramatically in recent years. So, while Utah may still have a reputation for unusual liquor laws, visitors will quickly discover that ordering a drink here is easy enough once you understand a few local nuances—and always carry your ID with you. Once you do, you’ll find an increasingly sophisticated drinking scene worth exploring.

Park City Mountain

Located in the center of Park City and Canyons Village, Park City Mountain delivers a different kind of mountain adventure. The resort’s Adventure Park is designed for families, thrill-seekers, and anyone looking to add a little adrenaline to their summer. 

The Alpine Slide, a 3,000-foot descent that winds through the mountain beneath the Payday Express lift, remains the resort’s signature summer attraction. Riders control their speed as they navigate curves and straightaways, making it a memorable experience for both kids and adults. 

Utah’s longest Mountain Coaster offers another unforgettable ride, twisting through more than a mile of mountain terrain. Guests can also soar above the slopes on the Flying Eagle Zipline or race friends on the ZipRider, which reaches speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. 

Beyond the adrenaline attractions, Park City Mountain offers scenic chairlift rides from the new 10-person Sunrise Gondola, Crescent Chair, and Payday Lift for easy access to higher elevations and expansive mountain views.

The Red Pine Gondola provides lift-accessed mountain bike riding with all-level trails, highlighted by the scenic 28-mile Mid Mountain traverse and the top-to-bottom flow of Ricochet. Hikers can also explore everything from the panoramic Mid Mountain Trail to easy village trails like Sunrise Loop. Mini golf, climbing activities, and family-focused experiences are also offered. 

On July 2-4, all eyes will be on Canyons Village as it hosts the multi-day Forum Fest to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

Finally, on the Canyons Village side of the resort, golfers can play the 18-hole, par-70 Canyons golf course with 550+ feet of elevation change set against the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains.
