When your backyard is as beautifully diverse as the Park City area, the term “recreation” takes on a whole new meaning. This is not lost on the Park City Municipal Athletic & Recreation Center (PC MARC). Its summer recreational programs take full advantage of Park City’s boundless outdoor options. Whether you’re looking to give that mountain bike an overhaul and hit the trails or simply want to brush up on your swimming technique, here are a few of this year’s outdoor programs at the PC MARC.

Mountain Biking

The alpine trails around Park City, Heber, and Midway are excellent for mountain bikers, and the PC MARC will be hosting a variety of clinics and guided rides this summer. Clinics will be held on June 27 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and July 16 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Riders who want to brush up on their technique will also want to check out the skills clinics that will cover switchback and cornering techniques. These will take place throughout June and July, so it’s best to check the PC MARC activity schedule for the time that works best for you. 

Once your bike is primed and ready to go, there are plenty of guided experiences available. Intermediate and advanced riders should consider the Guided Epic Rides that will tackle some of Park City’s most scenic trails. Wasatch Over Wasatch (June 25 from 5:30-8:30 p.m.), Slate Creek (August 20 from 9 a.m. to noon), and Wasatch Crest (September 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) are all on the docket this year. The PC MARC provides a shuttle to each trail, a guide, and picnic for when the ride is finished.

The PC MARC also offers some great women-only experiences which range from Beginner Clinics throughout the summer to Moms on Bikes, a social cycling experience that will be every Wednesday at 9:30-11:30 a.m from June 17 to September 2.

Fishing

PC MARC’s Fly-fishing Camp is a great way for burgeoning fishers to sharpen those knot tying and casting skills, and it’s an excellent way for beginners to learn the basics. Volunteers from High Country Fly Fishers will be on hand to pass their skills and knowledge on to attendees. They’ll help with everything from casting techniques to choosing the right fly for the environment, and they’ll also have all the equipment and flies you need to make the most of each session—though attendees are welcome to bring their own gear. The camp is for fishers aged 12 to 16 and takes place at Deer Valley Ponds every Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. starting on June 10 and ending on July 1.

Swim Clinics

It’s hard to branch out from swimming at the PC MARC’s lovely pool, but taking a dip in some nearby outdoor bodies of water is always a welcome summer pastime. Deer Creek Reservoir, Echo Reservoir, Jordanelle Reservoir, and Rockport Reservoir are all excellent places for a cool mountain dip. Even if you’re planning a visit to one of these local reservoirs for a bit of wakeboarding, paddleboarding, or waterskiing, brushing up on your swimming technique will ensure a safe trip. Throughout June, July, and the first week of August, the PC MARC will offer swim clinics on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:15-7 p.m. that will focus on specific swim strokes along with water safety. These clinics are for anyone 16 and older and are specifically designed for stroke-ready swimmers. Each clinic session will have a specific focus, including backstrokes, breaststrokes, and freestyle swimming.

Wilderness First Aid

Even when you’re out fishing on your favorite riverbank or biking along your favorite trail, emergencies can happen. Regardless of what outdoor activity you’re planning on exploring this summer, the safety of you and your traveling companions is a priority. The Wilderness First Aid Clinics at the PC MARC are designed to teach attendees how to respond to emergencies while biking through the trails, taking a dip in a reservoir, or simply out for an alpine hike. Clinic instructors from Park City Recreation and Traverse Beyond will touch on everything from outdoor emergency preparedness, incident management, patient assessment, environmental concerns, and activity-specific injuries. These clinics will take place at the PC MARC on July 14 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., and attendees 16 and older are welcome to attend.

Summer on the Wasatch Back is a smorgasbord of outdoor activities, but you’ve got to eat sometime. Utah is home to some truly excellent farms and orchards, and locals know that the best ingredients for home cooking are the ones that come from your own backyard. This year, Wasatch and Summit counties will be hosting several weekly markets where growers from all over the state can set up shop and showcase the fruits of their labor. 

In addition to traditional farmers markets, the local agricultural communities have come together to create some truly innovative options for those wanting to get homegrown produce throughout the year. From community-supported agriculture (CSA) packages to self-serving markets, there has never been a better time to be a Utah locavore.

Summer Staples

When the weather gets warmer in Park City, you get plenty of opportunities to see the town slow down as it welcomes two of Park City’s most popular outdoor markets. On Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Park City Mountain Resort is home to the Park City Farmer’s Market (parkcityfarmersmarket.com), which has been a local institution since 2001. This is perhaps the most well-known farmers market in Summit County, and its list of local vendors seems to grow each new year with food stands selling everything from local produce to artisan honey. 

The Park Silly Sunday Market (parksillysundaymarket.com) takes over Main Street on 11 Sundays with yet another excuse for some outdoor shopping. Park Silly is a bit more geared toward arts and crafts, but there are always a few food vendors onsite for this summer market. 

Heber and Midway

The city of Heber has evolved its local farmers market into a multi-faceted experience that features local produce stands, food vendors, and live music. The Heber Market on Main (hebermarket.com) began in 1998 and has become known for turning the local Main Street Park into a community destination for three days a week. On Thursdays, the market hosts its traditional farmers market from 5-9 p.m. and features live music from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

On Saturdays, the market hosts the Saturday Sunset Music Series, which is a weekly outdoor concert held at Main Street Park. Visitors can grab a quick bite at one of the local food vendors or from a nearby restaurant before settling in to enjoy some live local music. Sundays continue the concert theme with Soulful Sunday, a day of yoga in the park and live gospel music. 

Moving over to the green hills of Midway and its quaint town square on 200 West Main Street you’ll find the Saturday Farmers Market. This traditional farmers market hosts local produce vendors and farmers throughout the square and takes place every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Between the Thursday market in Heber and the Saturday market in Midway, area residents will be sure to have all their locally sustained shopping well in hand. 

Farm Stores and CSAS

Cultivating a strong farmers market presence in Utah is an excellent way to boost the local economy and encourage more sustainable shopping practices. For those who love a local market but perhaps can’t always make a trip during the scheduled time, the Plus 7 Farm Store in Kamas is an excellent option. 

Founded by Chelsey Leavitt of L2 Ranch, the Plus 7 Farm Store is a neighborhood market that sources its products from local farms in the area—think of it as a grocery store that only sells products from within a 50-mile radius. Operating out of a small shop just off of S.R. 248, the Plus 7 Farm Store sells goods from over 20 local vendors. “We have beef, pork, chicken, local eggs from backyard farmers, produce, micrograins, baked goods, raw honey, ceramics, and mugs,” she says.

In keeping with the community-centric concept, the store’s point of sale is based on the old-fashioned honor system—customers can pop in, grab what they want, and pay for their merchandise electronically onsite. Leavitt got the idea from her sister who operates an “honesty box” for her homemade sourdough bread in Hiko, Nevada. “As soon as I looked into that, I knew that’s what I had to do,” Leavitt says. “I have faith in our community, and people have been amazing. I haven’t had any problems.” The concept has done well enough in Kamas that a second Plus 7 Farm Store has also opened in Farmington.

Francis Family Farms (francisfamilyfarms.com) is a popular Midway farm that maintains a farm-side store for those looking to shop for local produce year-round. The farm grows a wide variety of fruits and veggies, pumpkins, and flowers that can be ordered online or picked up at the farm. Thanks to the farm’s “U-Pick” program, farm visitors can visit the fields in person, select their own produce, and physically pick each item from the ground. With these more interactive offerings, Francis Family Farms is a great place for families to gain a better understanding of where their food comes from. The literal “farm-to-table” pipeline that local shoppers can experience here is an important concept to cultivate. 

Both Wasatch and Summit counties offer several options for community supported agriculture (CSA) programs furnished by local farms. Each CSA has its own schedule and pickup times, but there are enough of them to accommodate a busy summer schedule. Copper Moose Farm (coppermoosefarms.com), for example, offers vegetable shares, egg shares, and bread shares with their CSAs, and each order can be either pre-packed or hand-selected at the Copper Moose Farm store.

Moonshadow Farm (moonshadowutah.com) in Hoytsville also offers a popular CSA program that takes advantage of the farm’s biodynamic agricultural practices. Its 40-year legacy includes being named Utah’s first Demeter-certified farm, and longtime patrons of the farm have been visiting since it went by the name of Ranui Gardens. 

These days, Moonshadow Farms is known for its high-quality CSAs and its presence at local farmer’s markets, but it’s also one of the chief suppliers of local produce for some of Utah’s finest restaurants. Handle, Twisted Fern, Loma, and Urban Hill are all customers of Moonshadow Farm. The farm also hosts Farm Walk/Talks where visitors can meet up with the farmers and discuss agriculture and sustainability before snagging some of the farm’s organic produce on the way out.

The summer music scene on the Wasatch Back has a little something for everyone this year. Park City’s ski resorts take advantage of their alpine environs to host memorable concert experiences under the stars, and the area’s indoor venues boast exciting lineups throughout the summer. 

The big event of the season has to be the Deer Valley Music Festival—it’s great to see the Utah Symphony perform at Abravanel Hall, but there’s something truly magical about hearing them perform the classics beneath a setting sun.

This summer will also feature a stacked schedule from the Park City Performing Arts Institute, which will be hosting its popular Concerts on the Slopes series. With entire weekends dedicated to country music and ’80s pop, crafting your very own multi-day music festival is only a hotel booking away. 

Perhaps the most unique aspect of summer music throughout Wasatch and Summit counties area is the fact that each performance can feel like a destination experience in itself. Attendees can pack their coolers, spread out their blankets, and enjoy the twilight picnic vibes as some of the world’s best music blends with the cool mountain air. Break out the mini coolers and breezy linens—here are the festivals and venues that are sure to rock this summer. 

Deer Valley Music Festival

Kicking off on July 17, the Deer Valley Music Festival is one of the concert highlights of the year. The festival takes full advantage of Deer Valley Resort’s arboreal setting for its outdoor performances at the Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater. It’s here where the Utah Symphony will perform the enduring work of Beethoven and Stravinsky while welcoming contemporary artists like Lyle Lovett and Idina Menzel. In addition to the outdoor concert venue, the Deer Valley Music Festival will host a selection of chamber pieces presented at nearby St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The unique acoustics coupled with gorgeous architecture create an intimate concert experience that showcases the more personal concertos of Mozart and symphonic compositions of Haydn and Mendelssohn. Concerts on the Slopes

Park City Mountain Resort’s Canyon Village Amphitheatre is the backdrop for this year’s Concerts on the Slopes series, which is great for those after a casual night of outdoor music. This year’s lineup includes a wide variety of musicians and genres from Grammy-nominated folk-soul artist Allen Stone to rock legend Rick Springfield. Concert fans seeking a bit of a nostalgic throwback will want to check out ’80s weekend, which will feature shows by 38 Special, Taylor Dayne and Exposé, and Sawyer Brown during the last weekend in July. It’s shortly followed by Country Weekend, which will feature Mark Chesnutt, Lonestar, and Walker Hayes. Single tickets are on sale as are VIP ticket packages.

Egyptian Theatre

One of Park City’s oldest performing arts venues, the Egyptian Theatre has long been a destination for the arts on historic Main Street. This summer, the iconic theater will be hosting a combination of live concerts and family-friendly musicals. July’s programming includes a two-night show from Electric Avenue, a nostalgic throwback to the MTV vibes of the mid-1980s. The band’s setlist is comprehensive—they even have full sets dedicated to iconic artists like Prince and David Bowie. July will also feature “Frozen: The Broadway Musical” and “Shrek the Musical Jr.” which will be ideal for audiences of all ages. Highlights of the theater’s August programming include live concerts from Sixpence None the Richer and Pure Prairie League. With close proximity to some of Park City’s finest restaurants, a show at the Egyptian Theatre is perfect for a Main Street experience.

Brighton Ski Resort

Just because the snow has melted doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to do at Brighton Ski Resort. Fans of local music will want to check out the Mt. Majestic Music Series that takes place Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer. The series kicks off with shows from Brian Englund of local band Slow Ride and the Jeff Crosby Band on July 19. Shows continue until September 1 when The Cottonwoods close out the series. Spending a Saturday at one of Brighton’s popular disc golf courses before taking in some locally sourced tunes sounds like a lovely time in the hills.

The Owl Bar at Sundance Resort

Packing all the amenities of a luxury resort into a rustic, alpine experience, Sundance Resort is ideal for those looking for a cozy getaway. After a mountain biking excursion through the mountains or an exhilarating hike, visitors can always unwind with some live music at the Owl Bar. With roots in Western history—legend has it that Butch Cassidy himself was a regular at the Owl Bar of old—this rustic restaurant and bar is a great place to grab a few drinks on the patio before taking in a concert. On weekends and some weekdays, local musicians explore genres like country, folk, and alt-rock in the intimate saloon-style setting. 

TedFest

Head 20 miles south of Heber and you’ll hit the small town of Wallsburg, which is known for its beautiful countryside, small-town vibes, and the summer music festival known as TedFest. Previously known as the Wasatch Mountain Music Festival, TedFest was renamed in 2023 after its founder, the late Ted Shupe. Taking place from July 17-19, TedFest features a great lineup of local talent that celebrates genres from bluegrass and country to jazz and blues and plenty of interactive programming. TedFest has an amateur singer-songwriter contest that offers a cash prize and the chance to take the main stage of the festival. For those after a low-key music festival that caters to all ages, TedFest is the way to go.

PowerMountain Music Festival

If TedFest officially sold you on the charms of Wallsburg’s music appreciation efforts, then you’ll want to check out the PowerMountain Music Festival August 28-30. Formerly known as Boomerfest, this weekend-long festival brings iconic acts of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s to the mountains of Utah for a rockin’ good time. This year’s festival will feature Bow Wow Wow, Featherborn, Gene Loves Jezebel, Ty Herndon, and Head East along with Journey tribute band Escape the Journey and Poison tribute band Thorns & Roses. Programming also includes sets from DJ Gordon along with daily IWR Wrestling Utah matches.

Since its invention nearly 10,000 years ago, beer has helped the human race get through a lot. Cultural milestones like the pyramids of Egypt and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were fueled by beer rations that kept laborers hydrated, fed, and just inebriated enough to get through the workday. Americans’ shared love of lagers, ales, and stouts overpowered the government’s enforcement of Prohibition, bringing the country together like never before. 

And today, a passion for beer brewing has given rise to a number of craft breweries here in Utah. With the rich history and anthropological importance that has made beer into the cultural phenomenon it is today, it makes sense that amateur home brewers would want to try their hand at the ancient practice. But where do they start?

According to Karsen Moon, head brewer at Park City Brewing, homebrewers need to start by figuring out what kind of beer they want to drink. “It’s all about figuring out what you like and why you like it,” he says. “Here at Park City Brewing, I primarily make beers that I want to drink because that’s where I thrive.” 

It may seem like a simple question, but like most elements of home brewing, it’s more complicated than you might think. For example, if you’re looking to brew a lager, that choice will inform everything from the ingredients you start with to the temperatures you use. 

Once you have a clear idea of what beer you’re hoping to brew, it’s time to draw upon the collective knowledge that has been cultivated since the days of ancient Mesopotamia. 

“There’s a ton of good books on brewing, but Reddit is full of the kind of knowledge and problems that people who are day-to-day employees have to deal with and is 10 times better than a theoretical book,” Moon shares. A subreddit like r/Homebrewing is full of practical homebrewing knowledge while r/TheBrewery is a gathering of professional brewers and distillers. Of course, Reddit is also home to several niche subreddits for the curious homebrewer. 

With visions of that perfect home-brewed IPA, pilsner, or lager fully defined, it’s time to put the ingredients to work. This is often the part of the process where homebrewers become a bit daunted by the task they have undertaken. As brewing’s legacy spans thousands of years, selecting the right kettle, fermenter, and hydrometer for your needs requires a bit of guidance. This is where The Beer Nut in Salt Lake City comes in. “The Beer Nut is a primary resource for equipment and materials,” Moon explains. “They have everything you need from a starter kit that gives you all the ingredients and recipes to make beer in a stock pot on your stove to buying an $8,000 professional setup.” 

Since 1994, The Beer Nut has been Utah’s preeminent repository of all things homebrewing. A.J. Vanzeben, a longtime employee and award-winning homebrewer, explained that homebrewing doesn’t have to be intimidating—you just have to know where to start. 

For homebrewing rookies, Vanzeben recommends starting with extract brewing, in which the legwork of mashing whole oats has already been completed. By using malt extracts, which are concentrated syrups or powders made from malted grains, homebrewers can whip up their own beer with less fuss and less kitchen space than the all-grain brewing alternative. 

“Extract brewing is probably the easiest way for someone to start out with pretty minimal equipment,” Vanzeben says. While The Beer Nut has inventory for even the most seasoned of homebrewers, the store offers self-contained starter kits with everything a fledgling brewer needs to get hopping. 

After trying one’s hand at a few pre-made ingredient kits, it’s common for the homebrewer to graduate to brewing with their own ingredients and recipes. This of course begs the question of what grains and hops the homebrewer should seek out. According to Vanzeben, the ingredients will also depend on the type of beer the homebrewer is seeking to create. “Some beers and ales are hoppier than others,” he says. “The first thing I ask homebrewers who are wondering about ingredients is, ‘What do you want to drink?’ and then we go from there.” 

In addition to offering equipment and guidance for the local homebrewer, The Beer Nut’s stock of ingredients is enough to keep any homebrew enthusiast busy. From malt powders and extracts to dozens of curated grains from which to build a base, The Beer Nut has a dizzying variety of ingredients to choose from. 

The truly adventurous homebrewer can also find a huge selection of fruit flavorings—everything from guava and passionfruit to pineapple and cranberry. That’s on top of the hop pellets, honey, spices, and yeast available. 

Even with such great resources at the local homebrewer’s disposal, brewing remains a scientific endeavor and failure is always an option. Like all science, however, failure is a necessary part of the experience. “It’s crazy to me when people just think they can brew the same beer twice in a row without having the whole plan change,” Moon marvels. “Our hops change. Our grains change, and it’s almost impossible to make the same beer twice.” 

Despite the nuances required to get a homebrewed beer right, it’s the kind of hobby that puts the journey over the destination. Sure, the goal is to craft a homemade beer that captures your favorite flavors and textures, but tweaking the process, taking notes, and making revisions with each batch is where the true magic of homebrewing comes to life. “Learn the fundamentals and learn why you’re doing what you’re doing,” Moon concludes. “Homebrewing is for people who enjoy beer and are passionate about creating new flavors.”

At first glance, selecting a color palette for a brand-new room or an aesthetic overhaul of an existing room might seem like a simple endeavor. Check out a few paint samples, test a few swatches, and presto—you’re ready to lay down the drop cloths and get rolling. 

The reality of picking a new color scheme is a bit more nuanced, however. Color has a direct influence on our mood, and even a color that seemed comforting in a display can become garish and distracting in the wrong light. 

Before deciding on the color scheme that’s right for your mood, space, and lighting, taking a crash course in color theory isn’t a bad idea. Though it’s possible to get lost in the complexities, the basic principles are enough to get you started. Essentially, color theory organizes colors on a wheel that is separated into the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue. Each primary color has its own variations and mixtures—this is where you’ll see your oranges, purples, and greens start to appear.

A color wheel, which you can find online, arranges these colors together so you can see what colors work well with one another. Analogous colors are those that sit side by side on the color wheel such as oranges and reds, and complementary colors are those that sit opposite one another like greens and purples. There are many ways to take advantage of a complementary or analogous color scheme but adhering to these basic tenets of color theory is a great way to get started. 

For the more experienced do-it-yourselfers, Park City Interior Designs founder Erika Carlucci provided some more advanced color tips. Carlucci started as a graphic designer in Los Angeles before studying interior design in Australia. “We landed in Park City because it seemed like a good place to start a family,” she says. In 2015, Carlucci founded Park City Interior Designs and has been leaving her mark around the Park City area since then. 

As a seasoned interior designer, Carlucci calls out a few color design trends that are going out of style. “Grays are not really in vogue anymore, and the black and white stark contrasts are starting to go away,” she continues. Instead, colors that offer an organic palette are starting to catch on, especially in Park City. “I would say it’s definitely going in the more natural direction. I think with color, it’s probably more earth tones than jewel tones, so caramel colors and camel colors are going strong.” 

One best practice for selecting a color scheme is the 60-30-10 rule that suggests a foundational color for 60% of a room, a secondary color for 30%, and an accent color for 10%. These color combinations can come from painting, wallpaper, furniture, wall art, or carpeting, but they should at the very least be analogous or complementary colors. “Even with a more neutral palette, you can always work with blues and greens in accent pieces,” Carlucci says. “Bronze and brass finishes are always popular in Park City.” 

It’s not uncommon for DIY home designers to hit a few snags in the process. For family dwellings or communal office spaces, color scheme decisions need to have a little something for everyone. In situations like these, Carlucci suggests taking a pause and revisiting the space’s purpose. 

“I ask my clients how they want the room to make them feel or what mood they want to project and who’s their audience,” she explains. After answering those initial questions, building a color concept that is ideal for a living room or a conference room becomes a bit less intimidating.

One pro tip that Carlucci suggests considering is the effect that a room’s lighting can have on its colors. “Exterior colors are so different from interior colors because of the light,” she says. “Light is going to change the color drastically from room to room, and you definitely have to look at a color in your space throughout the day. It will make a world of difference.” She suggests testing out the color/light dynamic in your chosen space by placing a peel-and-stick paint chip sample on the wall. “You can watch how your room changes throughout the day and how the color changes with the light,” she explains. 

The colors in a space can give a room a complete transformation. By considering how the room should make people feel or how the room is supposed to function, the DIY designer can use a bit of basic color theory to pull everything together.

With a history spanning over 40 years in Utah, the Sundance Film Festival will be leaving the mountains of Park City after the 2026 festival concludes. As this year marks Utah’s final Sundance before it relocates to Boulder, CO, there will be plenty of programming designed to commemorate the festival and its local history. 

The most notable addition this year is the Park City Legacy Program, which celebrates the festival through a collection of anniversary screenings, exclusive talks from festival alumni, and a culmination event to conclude the festival. The Legacy Program events will take place from January 27-30.

To memorialize Sundance Institute founder Robert Redford, the Legacy Program will host a screening of Downhill Racer (1969). As Redford’s first independent film, Downhill Racer was a major influence in the formation of the Sundance Institute, and this screening will serve as one of the many gatherings designed to celebrate Redford’s memory. Among these events will be a celebration event in Salt Lake City, the Directors Brunch at Sundance Mountain Resort, and an evening event and fundraiser called Celebrating Sundance Institute: A Tribute to Robert Redford. 

The fundraiser will take place at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley and will honor Robert Redford and his founding of the Sundance Institute. This event will also mark the inaugural Robert Redford Luminary Award, which recognizes industry professionals who have broken new ground throughout their careers. The award ceremony will take place during the fundraiser and will be presented to Ed Harris and Gyula Gazdag, who have used their talents to push the needle forward for the Sundance Institute.

As the Sundance Film Festival has been the launchpad for hundreds of notable films throughout its history, the Legacy Program will feature screenings of archival legacy films throughout the festival. These screenings will include films like American Dream (1991), Half Nelson (2006), House Party (1990), Humpday (2009), Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Mysterious Skin (2005), and Saw (2004). 

Many of these films have undergone 4K restoration and full soundtrack remaster for these screenings, and each one has gone on to receive accolades outside of the festival. Screenings will also include appearances from the filmmakers and performers whose memorable work made these films part of Sundance’s proud legacy. 

Outside of film screenings, the Legacy Program features a selection of talks and presentations as part of the festival’s Beyond Film series. These events will gather Sundance Institute alumni together to discuss Sundance’s Utah history and how the festival’s celebration of storytelling has impacted the world of cinema. For this final Park City series, talks will be centered around Sundance’s presence in Utah as well as what’s in store for the future of the institute.

The Legacy Program will conclude with a culmination event open to the public. Taking place on January 30, this event is about showing appreciation to the festival’s host city along with everyone who has made Sundance what it is today.

Though Utah sustains some nightlife vibe, it’s not uncommon for visitors to get thrown off by the Beehive State’s conservative take on liquor laws. We’ve all heard the stories of beer runs with visitors who are crestfallen to see that brews sold in grocery stores cannot legally exceed 5% ABV. While these laws may be a bit different than those of neighboring states, a bit of knowledge is all you need to help you avoid an awkward moment with the wait staff at a restaurant that you think might be a bar, or a bar that looks like a restaurant.

Perhaps the first thing to know is that Utah restaurants and bars are legally considered two different entities when it comes to alcohol service. Yes, most bars serve food, and yes, plenty of restaurants have bars, but drink ordering etiquette typically depends on whether you’re at a location that can be legally classified as a “bar” or a “restaurant.”
Locations that are considered restaurants have more limitations on alcohol service, the most notable being that alcoholic beverages cannot be served unless there is also food at the table. All this really means is that diners might need to wait a bit longer for drinks to arrive unless they order some appetizers first, so don’t get upset at your servers if your drinks arrive with your meal. 

In contrast to restaurants, locations that are designated as bars make it slightly easier to open a tab and keep the drinks coming, with or without food. Bars are typically recognized by the fact that guests need to be over 21 and prove it by scanning an official, unexpired ID like a driver’s license before they can be admitted. Make sure everyone in your party has their ID with them—even if you’re hitting the pubs with your great grandpa, he’s not getting in unless he’s ready to get carded. 

One thing to keep in mind when frequenting a Utah bar is that bartenders cannot legally mix a drink with more than 2.5 total ounces of alcohol. Most local bartenders still know how to whip up a mean cocktail despite these legal limitations, but don’t roll up to the club expecting heavy pours. 

If you’re hosting a get-together of your own and are in short supply of booze, your best bet is to hit up one of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services (DABS) liquor stores. They’re state-run establishments where patrons can purchase wine, liquor, and beer that has an ABV higher than 5%. That said, liquor that exceeds 80% ABV like Everclear is illegal and is not sold anywhere in Utah. The Park City area is home to three of these locations:

• DABS Utah State Liquor Store #36 – 460 Swede Alley
• DABS Utah State Liquor Store #37 – 1612 Ute Boulevard
• DABS Utah State Liquor Store #38 – 1550 Snow Creek Drive

These liquor stores are typically open from 11 am to 10 pm, but they’re closed on Sunday and most holidays so make sure you plan ahead. For more info, check out abs.utah.gov.
