I have long been a fan of Kate Sonnick’s column and in this one she perfectly verbalizes the reason we ski. The mountain becomes part of you and you it.

There was a time I honestly worked 80 hour weeks and managed to ski 120 days in a year, downhill and water. It’s a total separation from whatever is stressing your life and escaping, if only for a couple hours, and dealing with an activity that demands all of your attention while providing a real sense of floating in amazing natural locations. Sometimes shared with friends that will never be forgotten and sometimes alone in awe of where we are and the beauty that surrounds us.

For some of us, it’s our reason for living and breathing. I was living exclusively in Park City for a bit over 20 years and all of it spent working and volunteering at Canyons. The biggest joy was sharing my passion and igniting that same passion sometimes even in people that never skied in their life.

To see someone’s eyes light up as they become able skiers and develop a whole new skill they’ll carry forever. Those are memories I will carry with me always!
