The Park City Police Department responded to numerous traffic-related cases recently, including reports of erratic driving, issues on Main Street and suspected speeding.
The police regularly conduct traffic patrols, and the recent cases seemed to have arisen from standard officer patrols rather than a targeted operation. Park City has appeared busy recently, and road cases typically increase during times of heavy tourism.
The recent traffic stops occurred in a variety of locations. Public police logs oftentimes do not include details about whether a driver receives a warning or a ticket, but officers are believed to issue warnings in many cases if the person is not a repeat offender or a suspected violation is not deemed to be egregious.
Traffic violations have long been among the chief law enforcement-related complaints of Parkites.
Some of the recent cases included:
- On Aug. 16 at 10:14 a.m., an officer pulled over a driver in the area of Snow Creek Lane, indicating they emerged in an unsafe fashion after not stopping in a parking lot.
- On Aug. 15 at 10:40 p.m., a police officer pulled over a Tesla driver at Kearns Boulevard and Comstock Drive, apparently on a count of suspected speeding. The officer learned the vehicle was on autopilot, according to public police logs. The officer told the person that “they are still responsible for traffic laws,” the logs said.
- On Aug. 15 at 5:24 p.m., someone on Aerie Drive reported the driver of a Ferrari “sped down” the road. The person who contacted the authorities “hung up the phone he was so upset,” the police said.
- On Aug. 15 at 5:19 p.m., someone driving a Mercedes-Benz was “all over the road” and “crossing the yellow line” on Marsac Avenue.
- On Aug. 15 at 11:21 a.m., a driver of an Audi was reported to be “swerving in and out of traffic” on S.R. 224. The vehicle was also traveling faster than 50 mph, the police were told.
- On Aug. 14 at 3:51 p.m., a driver reportedly nearly hit people on or close to Homestake Road. It was not clear whether the people were in a vehicle or were pedestrians. The vehicle was described as a black Honda with “blacked out windows.”
There was also a series of cases in the Main Street core. Some of the drivers, the police said, impeded traffic while dropping people off. The police said several of those cases involved rideshare vehicles.
