A 41-year-old man was arrested in Coalville on Monday after he allegedly threatened to shoot employees at the County Courthouse, which serves as the seat of the local government and holds office space for multiple county officials and departments.
Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the building after a courthouse employee called dispatchers to report a man who had told Planning Department employees that he was “going to shoot everyone up,” according to a probable cause statement.
The County Courthouse was instructed to follow lockdown protocols until deputies arrived.
The man told law enforcement officials that “the voices in his head” told him to tell the Planning Department employee about the threat, but he reportedly refused to explain further. Deputies attempted to detain the man, who “violently pulled away” and allegedly began acting as if he would fight the deputies.
The deputies pulled the man to the ground to restrain him and place him in handcuffs.
Multiple witnesses at the County Courthouse told deputies they overheard the man’s threat “that he was going to come back and shoot at either them or the building.”
The man was booked into the Summit County Jail for threatening violence, interfering with a peace officer and disorderly conduct. He has not been officially charged in Third District Court as of Friday morning.
