Richard “Dick” Gary, 89, of Park City, Utah, passed away on April 22nd at the Summit Vista Independent Living Community in Taylorsville, Utah
Born on December 2nd, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, to John Gary and Marie Manning Gary, Dick was raised on Long Island, New York. After enrolling in Villanova University and serving in the US Army, Dick settled in New York City, where he discovered that he had a passion for broadcasting. He worked his way up to become the youngest ever manager of a radio station (WPIX) in New York City at that time.
Eventually, an offer to manage another radio station took Dick to Los Angeles, where he met the love of his life, Elsa Holtz Gary. They married on April 30th, 1978, and went on to form The Gary Group, an advertising and marketing company that would become the go-to agency in the music industry.
In 1980, they had a child, Amanda Gary, and lovingly raised her along with Dylan Gary (from Dick’s previous marriage).
Skiing was a lifelong obsession for Dick, and after coming to his beloved Park City for decades, he and Elsa retired to their Park Meadows home full-time in 2015. The two of them became active in local politics and started Voterise, a non-profit aimed at registering young Utahns to vote.
Dick is survived by his wife, Elsa, his children, Amanda and Dylan, his scores of friends all over the country, and by the thousands of people who shared a laugh with him throughout his long and happy life.
A celebration of life ceremony will be held at the Park City Library Community Space at 1255 Park Ave, Park City, UT 84060. Friday, May 15th at 12:30 pm (speeches to start at 1 pm) with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dick’s memory to the Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT.
Dick’s passion, generosity and untamable sense of humor will be remembered warmly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
