The organizers of the 2034 Winter Olympics in coming months want to craft an early version of a plan to stage the Games, something that will build upon the work that was undertaken during the bidding and in the nearly two years since the event was awarded.
The intention to draft what Utah 2034 calls a Games strategic roadmap was one of the highlights of the information released this week as the organizing committee leadership met. The organizing committee wants to finish the version of the roadmap in June, but a precise timeline was unclear. The committee said a roadmap would be an initial one with other versions to follow in the nearly eight years before the Games in 2034.
The organizing committee said the first version would cover “fundamental elements like initial objectives and vision, with an emphasis more on what we need to do in the next four years” through the Games of 2030 in the French Alps.
The organizing committee also outlined that it is “in the process of assembling” working groups that will be tasked with addressing transportation issues and security-related topics. The two issues are among the most important for the committee and will influence other aspects of the planning. The committee referred to them as “two very important elements in games planning.” The working groups are expected to be formed sometime in 2026.
The roadmap, even in an early form, will be of consequence to Park City and surrounding Summit County with the Park City area being crucial to the overall concept for the Games. There are three competition venues — Park City Mountain, Deer Valley Resort and the Utah Olympic Park — and the area will be a focus as organizers craft the transportation, security and celebration plans. It is a similar scenario to what occurred during the 2002 Winter Olympics, when the same three venues were used for competitions.
The roadmap will likely offer at least some guidance regarding the 2034 concept beyond the venue map that has been one of the priorities for the organizers. The idea that it will emphasize the desired progress over the coming four years is of note because that time period leads into the final years of the planning, when much of the work will be expected to be more operational in nature.
The organizing committee, meanwhile, thanked former Park City Mayor Nann Worel for her service on a steering committee and the host communities committee. It also welcomed her successor, Mayor Ryan Dickey, to the two committees. The seats are held by the mayor of Park City. They moved from Worel to Dickey when he took office in early January after Worel did not seek reelection in 2025 and Dickey won a tight contest, and the four-year term covers a time when the municipal Games efforts, like those of the organizing committee, are expected to significantly broaden.
The next 90 days are also anticipated to involve an organizing committee debriefing and evaluation of the Winter Olympics in Italy, the start of an education committee and a plan for technology.
