While many individuals strive for objectivity when judging people, institutions or situations, it can often be simpler to express opinions subjectively — a habit partly influenced by how we were raised. Regardless, I will do my best to remain objective in assessing the president’s first year in office.
He has successfully stopped illegal immigration across our borders, whereas previous presidents failed to do so. His failed efforts to negotiate peace in Ukraine have led to disappointment, and a lasting resolution is still elusive. Affordable health-care costs, energy initiatives, to name a few, have been lacking, and many families continue to struggle with rising living costs.
Trade and tariff agreements were updated with several countries, yet critics argue that the benefits are not as widespread as promised and possibly damaging to our economy. Health-care reforms, lowering pharmaceutical costs, have not been fulfilled and are still on the horizon.
His pardoning release of convicted insurrectionists is a betrayal of the American judicial system. His approval to increase the numbers of ICE police and their deployment of Gestapo-like tactics at times, resulting in deaths of American citizens, have come under grave scrutiny by the public.
Overall, the president’s performance is a mix of a few achievements, but predominantly a list of failures to improve the quality of life for all American citizens.
Despite promising to avoid endless wars, he ordered a strike on Iran without consulting Congress, worsening divisions and eroding public trust. Many citizens are increasingly dissatisfied with his leadership, questioning the administration’s ability to unify the country and improve America’s global reputation.
His previous hostile rhetoric toward allies, including NATO members, has led to diminished trust and respect for American leadership. That is why when he asked for their financial and possible physical support of the war, they countered by saying that it was his war, not theirs. It is basic psychology: Treat them with respect and they will return in kind.
The upcoming weeks will be crucial as the president faces mounting pressure to deliver on campaign promises, rebuild alliances with our allies, end the war he started with Iran, and implement policies that provide tangible financial relief for struggling families.
If you are dissatisfied with how this Republican administration is handling the domestic as well as world affairs, then make sure you vote in the November mid-term elections.
