The Park City Police Department received reports of animals sightings recently, including a series of cases involving moose.
The cases included:
- On Sunday, Feb. 22, at 7:38 a.m., an animal, described as a moose or an elk, was reported close to a pond off Deer Valley Drive.
- On Saturday, Feb. 21, at 12:03 p.m., a moose carcass was reported off Daly Avenue. The carcass, described as a calf, was seen approximately 750 feet from a trailhead, the police were told.
- On Feb. 21 at 7:59 a.m., a moose was reported to be on the ground in a parking lot on Iron Horse Drive. The animal was not moving, the police were told.
- On Friday, Feb. 20, at 9:35 p.m., a moose, described as young, was reported to be attempting to cross a road in the area of the intersection of Deer Valley Drive and Bonanza Drive. The animal was seen “actively crossing” nearby Poison Creek, the police were told.
- On Feb. 20 at 1:13 p.m., a moose was seen in the area of Park Avenue and Deer Valley Drive. The police were told people were approaching the animal.
- On Feb. 20 at 12:40 p.m., a deer, described as wounded, was seen in a backyard on Lakeview Drive. The person who contacted the police indicated they had been observing the deer since the day before the report. The police were told one leg was injured.
- On Feb. 20 at 7:47 a.m., a moose was seen “in the middle of the” road in the area of Deer Valley Drive and Sullivan Road.
- On Feb. 20 at 6:24 a.m., an elk herd was reported to be crossing S.R. 248 in the area of Richardson Flat. A police officer stopped traffic while the animals crossed the state highway.
- On Thursday, Feb. 19, at 12:23 a.m., a moose, described as young, was seen crossing Main Street.
- On Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 6:53 p.m., a large number of elk, described as upward of 100 animals, were reported to be approaching the road in the area of Solamere Drive and Deer Valley Drive. The person who contacted the police was worried a driver would hit the elk.
- On Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 5:15 p.m., an elk herd was reported on a hillside off S.R. 224. The person who contacted the police was worried the animals would attempt to cross the state highway.
- On Monday, Feb. 16, at 7:51 a.m., an elk herd, described as “huge,” was seen off S.R. 248 in the area of Quinn’s Junction.
There has long been concern in Park City about collisions between drivers and animals. Officers who respond to wildlife sightings typically attempt to ensure the safety of drivers and the animals.
