Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped a car on Interstate 80 last week and discovered three people under the legal drinking age with open containers of alcohol in the vehicle.
A sedan was driving westbound on I-80 without its registration information visibly displayed, which prompted deputies to pull the car over, according to a shift report from the Sheriff’s Office. The car was also speeding and following the vehicle in front of it too closely.
Deputies found two teenage passengers and one adult under the age of 21 inside with open containers of alcohol. The two juveniles were released to an adult, and the driver was cited for possession or consumption of alcohol while underage.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple other calls between Monday, Dec. 29, and Sunday, Jan. 4, including a wrong-way driver, driving under the influence and active arrest warrants.
Sunday, Jan. 4
Summit County Search and Rescue teams were deployed to find a woman who had a sudden medical episode near the Soapstone Mountain trailhead. The woman was ultimately located in Wasatch County.
Thursday, Jan. 1
Deputies stopped a car traveling westbound on I-80 after observing a traffic violation. During the stop, a K-9 alerted deputies to the smell of narcotics, and they discovered methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia inside the car. The driver was arrested and booked into the Summit County Jail.
Deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle whose owner had an active arrest warrant. They found cocaine while searching the driver. A subsequent search of the vehicle additionally resulted in the discovery of an open container of alcohol and drug paraphernalia. The driver was arrested for drug-related offenses and for the active warrant.
Wednesday, Dec. 31
Deputies stopped a car on S.R. 224 because of an equipment violation. The driver performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest and transported to the Summit County Jail.
Deputies stopped a wrong-way driver on westbound I-80. The driver showed signs of impairment and was arrested for a suspected DUI. The vehicle was impounded.
Multiple callers contacted Summit County Dispatch to report a vehicle “all over the road” in the eastbound lanes of I-80 near Coalville. They told dispatchers the car hit a wall and then continued driving on the interstate. Deputies stopped the car and conducted field sobriety tests. The driver was arrested under suspicion of DUI, and the vehicle was impounded.
