As we head into year-end “Best Of” lists, there’s one ranking Utah can’t ignore: Our state consistently ranks last in the nation for women’s equality, including economic opportunity and political representation. That reality affects every community — including Summit County.
Women remain underrepresented in the places where decisions are made, even though decades of research show that women’s leadership results in stronger collaboration and better outcomes for communities. This isn’t about replacing qualified men. It’s about ensuring all talent and perspectives are represented.
The Utah Women & Leadership Project recently launched A Bolder Way Forward initiative, a seven-year, statewide effort to improve outcomes for women and families.
We applaud Summit County for supporting BWF by forming a local coalition focusing on child care, domestic violence, entrepreneurship and political representation.
Political representation is why we’re writing today.
At a recent local forum, one message stood out: Women are far more likely to run for office when someone asks them.
So we’re asking.
To the women of Summit County who lead businesses, nonprofits, families and volunteer efforts every day — your experience and leadership are needed. Will you consider running for office?
Several county and state seats are up for election in 2026, with a filing deadline of Jan. 8. Park City residents also have an immediate opportunity: a vacant Park City Council seat will be filled by appointment in January, with applications due Jan. 5.

We also encourage the Park City Council and voters to consider not only individual qualifications, but the overall balance of our governing bodies. Highly qualified women are ready to serve, and more representative leadership leads to better governance.
If we truly value inclusion and progress in Summit County, our leadership should look the part.
