A driver who allegedly ran a stop sign initiated a pursuit led by Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputies in eastern Summit County on Friday.
Deputies attempted to stop a car with its flashers on in Coalville because they assumed the driver needed assistance, according to a departmental shift report. However, the car instead accelerated, ran a stop sign and “disregarded lights and sirens” from patrol vehicles.
The pursuit started on Coalville’s Main Street, but it was ultimately terminated because of weather conditions once the driver turned onto Interstate 80.
The car was later identified after the driver allegedly cut off a semi-truck near Castle Rock. Deputies tried to stop the car for a second time by spiking the vehicle, but the driver kept traveling for another three miles before a deputy disabled the car with a precision immobilization technique, or PIT maneuver.
Deputies arrested the driver for traffic offenses and drug charges.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple other calls between Monday, Dec. 15, and Sunday, Dec. 21, including intoxication, registration violations and another pursuit in the Snyderville Basin.
Thursday, Dec. 18
Deputies attempted to stop a vehicle on Ute Boulevard for a traffic violation. The car stopped, and the driver allegedly threw something through the passenger window. The vehicle then fled westbound onto I-80 and “accelerated to a high rate of speed.” The driver lost control of the car near mile marker 134 and ended up in a cluster of trees about 200 feet away from the road. The driver fled on foot, but K-9 teams later located and apprehended the individual.
Deputies stopped a car with a registration violation on S.R. 224. They identified the driver and discovered he was required to have an ignition interlock device in his vehicle, but it was not installed in his car. The driver was arrested and transported to the Summit County Jail.
A driver failed to stop at the intersection of Ute Boulevard and S.R. 224, so deputies initiated a traffic stop. The driver allegedly showed signs of intoxication and subsequently performed poorly on field sobriety tests. Deputies determined the driver was too impaired to operate a vehicle and booked him into the Summit County Jail for a suspected DUI and traffic violations.
Monday, Dec. 15
Deputies stopped a car in Kimball Junction after they observed multiple traffic violations. The driver spat in a deputy’s face during the investigation, and deputies determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol. They arrested the driver for a suspected DUI and assault on a peace officer, in addition to citing the individual for traffic violations.
