The South Summit football team fell 57-10 on Saturday night to top 2A seed San Juan in the state title game held at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman.
San Juan exploded in the game’s second quarter, scoring 30 points. The title game was all but over when South Summit quarterback Owen Mair connected with Blake Osguthorpe down the right sideline for a 37-yard touchdown to open the third quarter. San Juan star running back Jagger Nieves finished Saturday with four touchdowns, breaking the all-time state season rushing touchdowns record in the process.
South Summit was 8-5 this season — their first under head coach Levi Thompson. Thompson believes this year’s team set the tone for those to come. The Wildcats are chasing their first state title since 2018.
“Today didn’t turn out like we wanted,” Thompson said. “It’s an honor to be a part of it (state title game) with these guys. It’s something a lot of people don’t get a chance to be a part of, so they should treasure that.”
