This Saturday, Mexican cinema will take the big screen in Heber City with the showing of the classic film “Los Tres Huastecos,” starring Pedro Infante. The screening, organized in collaboration between Heber’s Ideal Playhouse and the Wasatch Latino Coalition, aims to offer a Spanish-language movie experience for the Latino community in the Heber Valley.
The event will take place Saturday at 3:30 p.m., with doors opening at three, at The Ideal Playhouse, 113 N. Main Street, Heber. Tickets are $3. The film will be shown in its original Spanish version with English subtitles so that both Spanish and English speakers can enjoy it together.
The idea came after a casual conversation between Alfonso Flores, co-chair of the Wasatch Latino Coalition, and the theater’s owners, who expressed interest in hosting events for the Hispanic community.
“They told me they wanted to do something for the community, to make it possible for people to come to the movies,” Flores explained. “That’s when we came up with the idea of showing films in Spanish.”
After exploring different options, they decided to start with a film from Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema, since obtaining screening rights for classic movies is more feasible.
“I chose ‘Los Tres Huastecos’ because it’s one of those movies I grew up watching on TV. It has music, humor and a lot of Mexican culture,” he said.
Beyond its nostalgic value, Flores emphasized that the project also has an inclusive purpose.
“My mom loved going to the movies, but she doesn’t go anymore because she doesn’t understand the films in English,” he said. “This is for people like her, who can once again enjoy going to the theater in their own language. At the same time, these films showcase our traditions, clothing and music. It’s a way to share our culture with new generations and with those who don’t yet know it.”
The event will also serve as a pilot screening. Depending on the public’s response, the theater and the coalition plan to continue with monthly showings and eventually bring more recent, Spanish-language films.
During the screening, there will be a suggestion box where attendees can share ideas for future films, and classic Mexican snacks will also be available for purchase.
“It’s an opportunity for us to come together, enjoy a movie and keep bringing more Spanish-language events to Heber,” Flores said.
