I listened with interest and some concern to the recording of the recent Park City Council meeting regarding the “5-Acre” development and the 5,700 square feet of space that is targeted toward non-profit programming for “arts, maker spaces and Create PC.” In the meeting the council decided that the space would be designed without consideration to the usage, they did not want “named spaces,” and want to choose later.
It seems to me that in this phase of the design, we would want to take the opportunity to include those who can contribute fully to the most effective outcome.
I’d like to encourage the City Council to reverse course and please include the Arts Council of Park City & Summit County as a partner in the design of the space, with Create PC gaining a permanent home in part of that space. The Arts Council speaks for all of us — visual artists, performing artists, Park City and Summit County residents.
They are fully plugged into the community and constantly receive feedback on what residents really want. They also understand what is needed to activate a vibrant community. Just look at what has been accomplished with Create PC and the various fairs and markets that the Arts Council coordinates.
Yes, I do want it all. I want to meet my friends in the new 5-acre site, grab some food and beverages, maybe listen to some cool music being performed, drop in a couple of shops, and head in to Create PC artists’ collective to take a look at some of my art.
This is our opportunity to ensure that the 5-acre parcel will exceed expectations and create a place that all of us want to hang out in. Let’s do it right!
