Once again I write regarding the development in and around Park City, this time as it specifically applies to the 5-acre Bonanza parcel. I feel like I am fighting for the soul of our city — is anyone else?
I have learned that city leaders and their development partner made it clear at a recent special council meeting that there will be no specific nonprofits guaranteed a space in the Bonanza parcel.
This could mean that a space for the Arts Council’s CREATE PC Local Artists Collective would not be afforded a much needed permanent home. Why is it important? Because if the goal is to develop a community focused, vibrant area that reflects local values, then not creating space for the local nonprofits, especially the arts, would be a huge mistake. CREATE PC should be permanently rooted in the heart of Park City.
Imagine a CREATE PC collective gallery, a Brand PC local entrepreneurs retail shop, a local bakery, a locally owned coffee shop, a taco shop, a cool bar that doesn’t cost a fortune.
These types of businesses cannot afford Main Street rents and should be the center of this city-owned parcel of development. In this space we don’t need more $300 dinners, high-end art galleries, $20 cocktails, or $200 T-shirts.
We don’t need more housing density in this area. We need a vibrant, arts-centered, locals-focused, fun, relaxing space.
We only have one chance to get this right. We locals are demanding a development that prioritizes local artists, creates vibrancy, has character and becomes a gathering place truly centered on community.
