A suspect reportedly armed with a rifle and a handgun was taken into custody near Trailside Park around 7:40 a.m. on Sunday.
The incident started around 5:30 a.m. when Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an alarm call at the Park City Gun Club on Old Highway 40.
When deputies arrived, they heard what they believed to be gunshots coming from inside the building, Sheriff’s Sgt. Skyler Talbot said in a media release. “While still outside, deputies and assisting officers from Park City observed multiple shots being fired from inside the building toward the outside.”
A man authorities did not name but described as in his 40s from Utah left the Gun Club and got into a vehicle.
Deputies attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect fled, leading to a pursuit,” Talbot said. The man was the only occupant in the vehicle.
A short pursuit ensued and ended near Trailside Park, where the vehicle crashed and the suspect didn’t respond to commands to surrender.
This led to a standoff with the SWAT team that lasted for about an hour and 20 minutes before finally surrendering while local law enforcement surrounded the area.
Initial scanner reports speculated that a deputy was shot in the hand. However, Sheriff’s Sgt. Felicia Sotelo said no deputies were shot and all law enforcement was safe.
Talbot later said one deputy had minor injuries, “possibly from a bullet ricochet or flying debris while outside the Gun Club.”
No shots were fired by law enforcement during the incident, authorities said.
U.S. 40 and the frontage road were closed in both directions during the incident.
Scanner traffic described the suspect as appearing emotional.
In the end, the suspect threw a magazine and a rifle outside the vehicle and eventually was taken into custody.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the Park City Police Department, the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office and the Utah Highway Patrol responded to the incident. The response included a SWAT team from the Summit County and Park City agencies.
The Sheriff’s Office did not immediately have information about any preliminary charges against the man.
As of 8:15 a.m., law enforcement was still processing the scene at Tailside Park and the Park City Gun Club.
“We’re really grateful for everyone’s assistance, and we’re really grateful that everyone is safe,” Sotelo said.
