Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputies chased a vehicle connected to a possible Jeremy Ranch burglary on Thursday before ultimately terminating the pursuit.
Deputies were dispatched to a burglary alarm at a gas station and saw a white Cadillac leaving the area when they arrived, according to a shift report. They initiated a traffic stop and briefly spoke to the driver, but the driver fled after deputies asked him to identify himself.
Deputies then pursued the Cadillac for a few miles before terminating the chase around mile marker 133 on Interstate 80.
Sgt. Skyler Talbot with the Sheriff’s Office said on Monday that investigators have not determined whether the driver was involved in a burglary or if the store “had even been burglarized.”
“While guided by departmental policy, Summit County deputies are given discretion in deciding whether to continue or terminate a vehicle pursuit, weighing the need to apprehend a suspect against the potential risks to public safety, themselves and the individuals involved,” he added.
The case is under investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple other calls between Monday, Aug. 11, and Sunday, Aug. 17, including a rollover accident, intoxication and overturned paddleboarders.
Saturday, Aug. 16
Summit County Search and Rescue was paged to help two people at Rockport Reservoir who fell off their jet ski during a microburst storm. The two individuals made it to shore unharmed before Search and Rescue arrived.
Friday, Aug. 15
Deputies responded to a call for a welfare check on a man asleep at a gas station in the Jeremy Ranch area. They contacted the man, who allegedly smelled of alcohol, and initiated standard field sobriety tests. The man reportedly performed poorly, and deputies arrested him for a suspected DUI.
Thursday, Aug. 14
Search and Rescue teams were paged to assist a man at Rockport Reservoir who fell off his paddleboard without a life vest. The man was seen approximately 20 feet from his board before witnesses lost track of him. The man was found on shore shortly after the Search and Rescue team arrived.
Tuesday, Aug. 12
Deputies responded to reports of an intoxicated man at a Kimball Junction store. He allegedly got into an argument with the store owner and headbutted the owner in the mouth. The owner then pushed the man, who fell and hit his head. The man was taken to the hospital, where he was cited and released to medical staff for treatment.
Monday, Aug. 11
Deputies responded to an overturned dump truck on White Pine Canyon Road. Witnesses said the driver lost control of his brakes during a turn and the vehicle rolled over, landing on the driver’s side door. First responders extricated the driver from the vehicle and transported him to the hospital in stable condition. Deputies handled traffic control, including road closures, and investigated the accident.
