Grant Fisher sought his first U.S. Track and Field Championship, and revenge on Thursday’s 10k winner Nico Young, Sunday afternoon at Eugene, Oregon’s Hayward Field. While Fisher would claim his revenge, he again finished second, this time to Paris Olympics 1.5K gold medalist Cole Hocker.
Hocker led the 20 man field for most of the race, and while Fisher, Young and others made late pushes, Hocker caught them all as they rounded the final corner of the 12.5 lap race. Fisher finished the race in 13:26.75, 30 tenths of a second behind Hocker at 13:26.45. Young finished in 13:27.05. Hocker also raced the championships’ 1.5K Saturday, finishing third.
All three men will go on to represent the U.S. in the event at the World Championships in Tokyo come late-September. Fisher will also race the 10K at that event.
“Wanted that win, but the big stuff is in September,” Fisher said. “Happy to be on the team.”
The final events of the championships will be the women’s 5K at 3:31 p.m. and the men’s 110m hurdles at 3:54 p.m., both to be broadcast on NBC and Peacock.
