The MARC is in the process of upgrading its lap pool and expanding it from six lanes to eight lanes, which is a great upgrade. But the real missed opportunity for the city is that the city is not upgrading the filtration system from pure chlorine to a saltwater system.
Saltwater systems use a fraction of the chlorine that pure chlorine systems use. You may not be aware of this, but most countries in Europe do not allow a pure chlorine filtration system in their pools.
My wife and I are Floridians. This is the fifth summer we have spent in Park City and eventually we will move up here full time. I am a lap swimmer, but I have never used the pool at the MARC because of the chlorine in the pool. I have been a lap swimming competitively and recreationally for over 60 years. And at this point in my life, I am almost allergic to chlorine, which is why I don’t swim in pure chlorine filtration system pools like pool at the MARC.
Chlorine is a poison. Why would anyone want to swim in diluted poison leaching through your skin.
I was the president of the board of directors of the condominium where we live in Florida when we had an opportunity to upgrade our filtration system several years ago to salt water from a pure chlorine filtration system. We made the leap and have never looked back. This upgrade to our filtration system turned out to be easier and at a lower price point than we anticipated. Our neighbors in Florida love the saltwater system and wouldn’t go back to a chlorine system ever.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this letter, I believe that the major and members of the City Council are missing out on a huge opportunity to upgrade the pool filtration system at the MARC to a saltwater system while the pool is being expanded and under construction this summer. Please carefully consider this upgrade while the construction is taking place.
