Summit County Search and Rescue last week helped extract a man from the Uinta Mountains after he had been crushed by a horse.
Sgt. Skyler Talbot with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said Search and Rescue received a call on July 8 from the chief pilot of a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter. The pilot said he’d taken a satellite phone call from someone who said an adult man had fallen off a horse, and the horse then fell on the man.
Medical helicopter pilots located the group, but they weren’t able to land in the immediate area. The crew subsequently landed as close to the group as possible and hiked to the injured man on foot.
The chief pilot with the Department of Public Safety conducted a hoist operation and then transferred the man to the medical helicopter, which transported him to a hospital in the Salt Lake Valley.
Search and Rescue additionally brought its jet fuel trailer to refuel the Department of Public Safety helicopter so the pilot could return to his base in Salt Lake City.
Talbot said the man on the horse was working on a survey project approximately 1.5 miles north of Beaver Lake when the accident happened. He is recovering from non-critical injuries as of Monday afternoon.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple other calls between Monday, July 7, and Sunday, July 13, including a fatal accident and a search for a missing child.

Search and Rescue members responded to a call to assist with finding a missing child, but the child was found before they arrived.
Thursday, July 10
A 17-year-old boy traveling eastbound on Weber Canyon Road lost control of his motorcycle during a turn and slid into a fence. The accident was discovered approximately 30 minutes after the crash, but the boy had already died from his injuries.
