I was saddened by the letter to the editor in the July 2-4 Park Record authored by Tory Welch, Summit GOP vice chair. In many paragraphs, it basically said that those who participated in the recent No Kings rally were: “leftists,” “a smattering of arthritic hippies,” “bougie anti-capitalists,” “opportunistic looters,” “snot nosed anarchists,” “communists,” and wait for it, “privileged, entitled turds wallowing in manufactured oppression.”
I was shocked that this representative of the local Republican Party eagerly displayed such a lack of basic respect for fellow Summit County citizens exercising their constitutional rights. Then I felt only sadness when it occurred to me that the obvious lack of dignity in our national politics might just be a reflection of the same lack of dignity in our local community.
We can all do much better than this by accepting the human value of those who may disagree with us and seek ways to respectfully try to understand our differing points of view without demonizing each other.
