Heber City resident Jami Smith Hewlett, 48, was arrested Thursday in violation of a court order, according to Heber City Police Chief Parker Sever. Hewlett’s bail was set at $5,000. She met bail and was released that same day.
The court order is in connection with one of three criminal cases Hewlett is involved in. Officers filed a motion for her arrest on June 23, when Heber Police were informed of a violation of a stalking injunction filed against Hewlett. That order prohibits Hewlett from following, threatening, annoying or harassing the petitioner in a way that would cause emotional distress.
Officers attempted to place Hewlett under arrest on June 23. According to court documents, she instead slammed the door in the face of Heber Police officers.
“Jami is known to law enforcement,” a search warrant affidavit said. “She has been known to refuse to exit the residence when officers are at the residence. She has refused to be served legal documents by slamming the door in faces of different deputies.”
Sever said that police ultimately placed Hewlett under arrest on June 26, when she appeared in Fourth District Court for another court case.
Hewlett was charged with stalking — a class A misdemeanor — as a continuation of an incident at Lagoon Amusement Park on May 18. Then, Hewlett was charged with trespassing in the Davis County Justice Court for allegedly violating a ban after park security informed her she would be barred from the premises for a year.
Part of that incident, Sever said, is connected with the recent stalking violation. That’s because of Hewlett’s active presence on social media. Sunday, Hewlett posted a video of her interaction at Lagoon with Tausha Ann Hewlett, 50, and Tausha’s daughter.
Along with two class A misdemeanors in relation to her stalking charge, Hewlett is also being charged with a class B misdemeanor for child abuse. Her husband, Michael Eklof Hewlett, 45, is being charged with a third-degree felony for retaliation against a witness. Michael has filed as a candidate for Heber City mayor.
According to a Child Abuse Neglect Report, there are “ongoing” incidents of Hewlett’s alleged abuse. During interviews, the children described incidents where Hewlett was physically and emotionally abusive.
In 2021, one child reported having to go to the hospital after Hewlett allegedly tackled the child when she would not hand over her cell phone. She was unresponsive initially and then taken to the emergency room.
Another incident happened when Hewlett allegedly “forced” one child to go down a harder ski hill. Hewlett allegedly refused to take her in for medical care after the child complained of pain after breaking her arm.
“The referent said that they were making fun of her for asking for a doctor,” the report reads.
The report also detailed one incident when Michael dragged a child by her legs to “force her to go” to a Disney on Ice event.
“SH then began to say how her siblings helped Jami hit SH. Jami would hold SH by the arms and tell SH’s siblings to ‘attack her,'” the report details.
In interviews with Michael and Jami Hewlett, both deny any recollection of the described incidents. A pretrial conference for Hewlett is scheduled for Sept. 17 in Farmington.
This year marks Hewlett’s third time running for elected office in Heber City. She also ran for Heber City Council and Wasatch County Council in 2023 and 2024. In November, Hewlett was voted off of the Heber City Planning Commission after she allegedly impersonated a business owner.
