When thinking about our two political parties and how deeply our nation is divided, I am reminded of a passage from the Bible that says, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
Of course, the passage refers to the crucifixion of Jesus, but I believe that there is a degree of irony in that passage that has implications for many Republican supporters of President Donald Trump. Many of have forgotten the principles by which this country was founded. Many are willing to support a leader who has authoritarian tendencies at the expense of crucifying democracy.
There are some who draw comparisons between current American politics and pre-Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler. Considering historical events, it may be advisable to consider different approaches to governance that avoid authoritarian leadership.
