As Pride Month approaches, you may begin to see more rainbow flags flying throughout Summit and Wasatch counties. This isn’t about political favoritism or divisiveness — it’s about unity, visibility, and standing in solidarity with a community that has too often been told it doesn’t belong.
The Summit Pride Foundation is hosting a Raise the Flag event for the month of June, encouraging all residents to proudly display a Pride flag in response to the Utah Legislature’s recent decision to ban Pride flags from state and public buildings. This ban sends a troubling message: that LGBTQ+ Utahns are not worthy of public recognition. We reject that notion.
Flying the Pride flag is not about excluding others — it’s about including those who have historically been excluded. LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face real threats to their safety, rights, and dignity. The flag is a visible gesture that says, “You are safe. You are valued. You belong here.”
Some may ask why cities or residents should fly the Pride flag when there is no equivalent flag for cisgender or straight people. The answer is simple: Society already recognizes cisgender and heterosexual identities. Most straight people have never had to fight to be recognized or protected for who they are. Pride flags don’t elevate one group above others — they help bring balance by acknowledging those who’ve been left behind.
We are calling on our neighbors and allies to show that love, inclusion and community matter more than exclusionary politics.
