With all of the Trump administration’s flooding of the zone with executive orders targeting our democratic institutions, in addition to going after the free press, universities, law firms and defying court orders relating to immigrant deportations and firing federal employees, there is another extremely serious issue that has gone relatively unnoticed so far. The Trump administration’s interior department plans to fast track approval of drilling and mining projects in the name of their so-called National Energy Emergency.
Our only emergency relating to energy is their tragic reversal away from accelerating clean renewable energy development and pushing to aggressively bring back the dirty, outdated and environmentally destructive coal industry, along with “Drill baby, drill” to reward the oil industry for their huge financial contributions to the Trump campaign.
The science is clear: Our planet is rapidly approaching a tipping point. Ignoring the dire warnings of climate change experts in favor of corporate profits will in the long term lead not only to environmental catastrophe, but economic catastrophe as well.
Our federal government must place protecting our future above corporate greed and loyalty to Trump, who only cares about himself and $$$$.
