A Park City crowd on Saturday railed against the Trump administration during a rally at City Park in the most boisterous local demonstration against the president himself and his policies since he retook office in January, talking under sunny skies about what they see as a darkness that has beset the country in the three months since the inauguration.
The demonstration was part of a nationwide movement targeting the president. The Park City Police Department estimated the crowd size at around 200 and said there were no law enforcement issues. People from various Park City-area neighborhoods were in attendance, as well as others from outside the immediate area. Senior citizens stood alongside young people.
The midday event drew roster of notable Democrats from Park City and surrounding Summit County, including at least one member of the Summit County Council.
The crowd gathered on the grass outside the City Park bandstand to listen to a series of speakers lambast the president. Many of the attendees displayed anti-Trump signs as they stood or sat in the grass.
“Stand together. Fight back,” Summit County Councilor Megan McKenna, a Democrat, repeatedly said as she urged the crowd to also make the statements.
“Now is not the time to erase our history,” McKenna said, describing that it is a time to learn lessons.
Glenn Wright, a former member of the Summit County Council and a Democratic stalwart in Park City, in his remarks labeled the administration “dangerously incompetent” and criticized the efforts by the Department of Government Efficiency to cut government spending. Wright, a Vietnam War-era Air Force veteran, was especially worried about the potential impact on monies for veterans affairs.
Diego Zegarra, who immigrated to the United States from Peru and is a naturalized U.S. citizen, told the crowd not to be patient or polite, encouraging them to pick their lane and get to work.
Rory Swenson, the chair of the Summit County Democratic Party, spoke about the economy and due process, predicting dark times ahead for the nation. He said Democrats must win elections and broaden the party movement.
Caroline Gleich, a Democrat from the Snyderville Basin who unsuccessfully challenged for the U.S. Senate in 2024, said there was a “moral obligation” to be at the event.
“We are here because our country is in crisis and it is up to us to keep showing up and speaking up,” she said.
Several of the speakers noted the day marked the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord that started the Revolutionary War. They said the Trump administration’s tariff policies could impact the Park City tourism industry and bring more volatility to financial markets. Some were critical of Elon Musk’s role in the administration, while others were livid with deportations.
The crowd was appreciative as the speakers took to the microphone, cheering repeatedly. The attendees brought numerous signs condemning the administration. One sign featured the American and Nazi flags side by side and said “It’s America vs. MAGA Fascism” and that it was a “Battle America must win!” Another read, in part, “Stop the Trump-Musk Coup.” Someone else posted one saying “Don the Con Not My King” and another’s message was “The Constitution is not optional.”
The Park City area is one of the state’s most reliably Democratic places, a result of decades of new arrivals from liberal strongholds like California and New York. Democrat Kamala Harris beat Trump in Summit County in 2024 by nearly 15 percentage points. Down-ticket Democrats in congressional and legislative districts in some cases enjoyed their best performance in Summit County en route to lopsided losses elsewhere.
The rebuke of the president on Saturday was one of the most direct in Park City since the early days of his first term. A giant crowd during the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017, estimated at up to 9,000, marched on Main Street in opposition to the new president.
