There are famous sayings that best describe the times in which we live. For example, in Roman history, Emperor Nero fiddles while Rome burns! What expression best describes America’s present times. I think it can best be described by the following analogy. “A frog is placed in a pot of cool water, but the sides of the pot are too deep for him to jump out to safety. So he just swims around enjoying the cool water. A fire is started beneath the pot, and the water temperature slowly rises accordingly. The frog merely adapts to the rising water temperature until it reaches a boiling point. Then it is too late, and the frog dies.”
The rest of the world is observing the second Trump presidency with a great degree of skepticism. Their view of what is happening in American politics can best be described using a cancer analogy. The first term of Trump’s presidency in 2016-20 could be considered as stage one and two of cancer. There was a degree of hope that his lack of government knowledge would improve, and he would become an effective leader in the free world. That did not happen, and he lost the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden.
He went into political hibernation for a short while, but re-emerged and re-energized to reclaim the presidency in 2024, which he accomplished. Now, just one month into his presidency, he has demonstrated to the American people as well as the rest of the world that he is going to drastically change government by dismantling meaningful institutions and longstanding agencies that have successfully carried the banner of American superiority throughout the world.
His blatant effort to reduce the services of the government to the benefit of the very wealthy in this nation and the deliberate attempt to ignore the Constitution by not seeking congressional approval for these massive spending cuts, along with his “America First” agenda in the world, represents stage three cancer. Hope for America’s prestige and superiority to remain in the world is rapidly fading.
If federal court mandates are ignored or not sought for political agendas, and courts do not successfully address these illegal actions, America faces a grave threat. Democracy is at risk of being replaced by authoritarianism. The courts are our last hope! So watch out, the pot is boiling.
