As most people in Summit County now know, there is a petition being circulated to put Ordinance 987 on the November ballot. With this ordinance, the Summit County Council approved an amendment to the Dakota Pacific development agreement that I believe permits Dakota Pacific to develop a project with far greater density, traffic and use impacts than the developer’s vested rights otherwise allow.
Many people interpret this petition to be against Dakota Pacific. As a result, those who are in favor of Dakota Pacific are encouraging people to not sign the petition. Let’s be clear: The petition is not for or against Dakota Pacific.
The petition is in favor of putting Ordinance 987 on the November ballot so that we may all participate in the decision-making process. If the ordinance is on the ballot, anyone who is in favor of allowing Dakota Pacific to build a project with greater density, etc., could then vote in favor of the ordinance.
By signing the petition, all you’re doing is saying, “I want to be part of the decision-making process.”
So essentially, the people who encourage you to not sign the petition (or even rescind your signature) are telling you that you should not want to participate in the decision making process for the community in which you live. Why would you not want your voice to count?
