Wasatch County School Board President Tyler Bluth has resigned. In unanimous votes, Kim Dickerson became the new school board president with Cory Holmes as the board vice president.
Though Buth’s resignation is not effective until Feb. 25, there was not a dry eye on the board at Tuesday’s meeting.
“The long and short of it is I’m a symptom of the crazy housing market in Heber Valley,” a teary Bluth said, adding that he recently had to sell his home due to rising costs of living. “One of the rules is you have to be within the boundaries. I’m on the other side of the street.”
With each board member giving their thanks, the resounding sentiment was that Bluth has “always done what was ethical, what was right, and what was kind.”
Tom Hansen, a Midway resident, referenced Bluth’s father, Allen Bluth, in a public comment.
“Tyler has followed in his dad’s footsteps and has made him proud by doing sometimes what has needed to be done and that sometimes has not been the easiest,” Hansen said.
Bluth said in the meeting that, originally, he joined the Wasatch County School Board to “clean up the baseball field.” As a physical therapist in Heber City, Bluth said he always admired education and educators.
“There’s a lot of good to this,” Bluth said.
Upon the excusal of Bluth from the meeting room, Superintendent Paul Sweat launched into the finer details of what would happen to the soon-to-be-empty school board Seat D, which Bluth was slated to hold until 2026.
“Based on the vote that just happened, Tyler’s seat is now open and we will begin accepting applications,” Sweat said.
On Feb. 25, the board will conduct interviews with select applicants, which will be open for the public to attend. At the board meeting later that day, newly elected President Dickerson will have the opportunity to entertain a motion to select one of the candidates of the day as Bluth’s replacement.
The newly selected Seat D board member will be able to finish out Bluth’s remaining term before deciding whether to run for the seat again.
Upon her nomination and acceptance of her position of school board president, Dickerson said that she wanted to make a promise to her fellow board members, including recently sworn-in members Breanne Dedrickson and Brad Ehlert.
“I just want to promise you that your voices will be heard,” Dickerson said. “And I look forward to working with all of you.”
