Is the objective of the county to support the existing tax base or to foster development and growth?
We have had two years of massive property tax increases. True, most of it is for assessments based on increased property values. However, where has all that “new” money gone? I agree that some of it has gone to cover increases due to inflation.
It is well past the time for all governments to assess the value of the programs and initiatives that they are pushing.
Summit County continues to spend every dollar it takes in without asking some basic questions.
- What is the primary mission and strategic objective of Summit County?
- How is increased spending going to help meet the strategic objectives of Summit County?
- How is the increased spending going to help or improve the environment for existing residents?
- Is the spending going to increase the likelihood that more development and people will be encouraged — resulting in an increased need for more new taxes?
- Do the existing residents in the county agree with all of the initiatives the county is trying to foster?
Before they blackmail us vote for higher property taxes or implement increased sales taxes, the county only has to look at California and see where that has taken them.
