Seven years ago, Megan McKenna was my tenth-grade AP Environmental Science teacher at Park City High School. Now, she is running for Summit County Council. Her dedication to conservation and education as well as her deeply rooted knowledge of the land and the people in Summit County make Ms. McKenna the ideal candidate for Summit County Council.
Beyond the formal learning that we did in the classroom, Ms. McKenna made a great effort to apply our
learning to our local community. We went on field trips to the wastewater treatment facility in Jeremy, the Recycle Utah location in Park City, and Summit County 3 mile landfill. She also invited guest speakers from organizations like the Summit Land Conservancy, Park City Municipal Sustainability Team, and Summit Community Power Works into the classroom. Reflecting on these experiences years later, it’s clear to me how important it was to Ms. McKenna that her students understood the local context of the environmental issues we were learning about.
Ms. McKenna is deeply familiar with the infrastructure and resources needed to maintain a healthy relationship between the people and the land in Summit County. She cares so deeply about the well-being of our local environment and was willing to spend countless hours coordinating these visitors and trips to ensure that students were well-educated on local environmental issues. I may add that these activities were not required of her by the curriculum and were pursued from her own interest in educating students on the local context of environmental issues. The fact that Ms. McKenna took the time to organize these activities, and then spend her time visiting places like the Jeremy wastewater facility with a group of 20 tenth graders illustrates her deep compassion and commitment to the Summit County community.
I am certain that she will take that same commitment and drive to her work on the Summit County Council. Vote for Ms. McKenna!
