I have known Megan McKenna since I was in junior high, eight years ago. She was my first teacher
in Utah and my favorite since then.
She taught environmental science at Park City High School, but she was more than an educator; she was a friend. I’d often visit her in her classroom early in the morning. I would find her toiling hard at grading assignments, creating lesson plans, and planning the day. But she always found time for me. We told stories and talked about each other’s day.
I would eventually become a TA for her class. I had some moments where I taught a single class, and I could never compare myself on par with her teachings. Ms. McKenna was so passionate about nature that she always made her students more curious and passionate about what she saw. When all things were done for the day, I’d come back to her classroom and chat until both of us needed to head home.
There was a time when I was overwhelmed and broke down crying in her classroom and I confided to her. She was there to comfort and help me. There was never a moment where Ms. McKenna didn’t consider the feelings of others. She had always took others to heart and always tried to find solutions to help them.
Compassionate and caring about the world and the people in it, she has always been a kind soul. If there’s anything I have learned from being her friend, it is that she would be a great candidate for being a member of the Summit County Council. She will always strive to serve others and always put their interest at heart.
