A 43-year-old woman died Tuesday evening after scuba diving at the Utah Crater at Homestead in Midway.
According to Wasatch County Fire District Battalion Chief R.L. Duke, the woman was taking a class when she began experiencing difficulty.
Though she was able to surface, her troubles persisted, leading to cardiac arrest.
“Wasatch Fire crews responded and worked with life-saving measures there and then transferred care to AirMed where she was flown to the University of Utah,” Duke said.
He added that the woman underwent resuscitative measures from Wasatch Fire responders, AirMed personnel and at the hospital. The efforts, however, ultimately proved unsuccessful.
According to Duke, the medical incident has been passed to Utah’s Office of the Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death. The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office was the responding law-enforcement agency on the scene. They had not responded to requests for further comment before press time.
The geothermal swimming area is 65 feet deep and has an average temperature of 94 degrees, according to Utah Crater’s website. It is used by swimmers, snorkelers and divers.
