The National Weather Service warned of a another snowy, blowy morning Wednesday as the latest storm rolled through the area, and the Utah Avalanche Center warned of continuing high danger of snow slides in the mountains.
The Weather Service has a winter weather advisory lasting until 11 a.m. Thursday, while OpenSnow’s Evan Thayer predicted snowfall at 6 to 12 inches at ski mountains across the region, likely more in the Cottonwood canyons.
Park City Mountain’s forecast for snow fell in the 6- to 10-inch range for Wednesday, along with a west wind of 17 to 22 mph and gusts up to 33 mph.
Thayer said there will be a break between storms late Thursday to early Saturday. Then: “A trough off the West Coast will set up and we will then see a moderate SW flow on Saturday with waves of unorganized moisture by afternoon. Utah mountains will be mild with higher snow levels and generally light snow amounts, but we could see a few periods of snow through early next week. Right now I think it’s only going to be a few inches of creamy snow at any given time.”
The Weather Service forecast concurred , with snow in the picture Saturday through Tuesday at least.
Brett Kobernik at the Avalanche Center said the “base of the snowpack is weak consisting of loose sugary faceted snow. We’ve added numerous layers of snow on top of it. The last few layers were higher density snow coupled with lots of wind loading. There were four days of natural avalanche activity. Another half inch to 1 inch of water weight (is) expected today along with fairly strong wind is enough to keep the fragile snowpack tetering on the edge of collapse.”
