An appointment to replace retiring Summit County Justice Court Judge Shauna Kerr could be approved this week.
The Summit County Justice Court Nominating Commission, which began meeting in the fall after the vacancy was announced, selected three finalists to fill the seat. The candidates are defense attorney Mark Flores and Summit County prosecutor Janet Elledge as well as Wasatch County and Lindon City Justice Court Judge Brook Sessions.
County Manager Shayne Scott was expected to make his recommendation sometime on Tuesday. The County Council is scheduled to meet at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday to ratify the decision. The selection must be certified by the Utah Judicial Council.
“The appointment of a new Justice Court judge is an important event for the community. The court handles over 700 citations/cases per month and is a critical interface between our citizenry and the justice system,” Summit County Attorney Margaret Olson said.
Kerr will retire at the end of the month. The new judge would start in January. The nominating commission is made up of County Councilor Roger Armstrong, County Clerk Eve Furse, Justice Court Clerk Nici Crystal, former Francis Mayor Byron Ames and Park City lawyer Steven Grayson.
The salary range is $122,628 to $157,664 per year, and the position includes benefits.
The County Council will meet in person on Wednesday at the Summit County Courthouse. The meeting will also be live-streamed. No other public items are on the agenda.
