On Saturday, Cody Winters of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, helped his U.S. snowboard team close out 2023 in style, excelling at the Davos, Switzerland FIS World Cup. In the parallel slalom men’s event, Winters finished one spot off the podium, fourth, after falling in the small (semi) finals.
In his third season on the U.S. team, having joined in 2022, Saturday’s result is Winters’ best of the 2023-24 campaign thus far. He also competes in snowboard cross events, both individually and as a part of a team.
Winters and the rest of the field will now take a break for the holidays before their return to World Cup action next month, again in Switzerland. They’ll strap up their boots on Jan. 13 in Scoul for more parallel slalom action, this time giant slalom.
Including Scoul, there are nine more World Cup events on the calendar, making the season only one-quarter finished. Winters sits 17th in the parallel cup standings and 7th in the cross ones.
Winters has experienced the majority of his success within the parallel world. Having finished 23rd and 24th in 2022 and 2023, respectively, this year’s standing would come as a massive improvement if he can make it stand.
The improvement in Winters’ snowboarding also comes at a great time, with the 2026 Winter Olympics drawing closer. According to NBC’s Olympic page, qualifying for the last Games began nearly three years prior to it, taking into account FIS points. If this holds similar for the 2026 Games, the qualifying considerations should begin soon. Winters has already competed in a Games, in 2022, taking home 29th in the parallel slalom event in Beijing.
