A standard traffic stop for speeding on Saturday led to the arrest of a man who was found with methamphetamine and a gun in Silver Creek.
Deputies stopped the car near Home Depot, according to a report from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. The man admitted to law enforcement he was driving on a suspended license.
A records check also revealed the man had an active warrant out of Draper for driving under the influence.
Deputies searched the vehicle. They found a small amount of meth as well as a glass pipe containing a “white powdery substance and black burn marks,” the report said.
A firearm was also observed in plain view. It is not legal to have a gun while in possession of drugs or while under the influence of a controlled substance or alcohol in Utah, regardless of whether the individual has a permit.
Deputies arrested the man on several charges such as speeding and possession of paraphernalia and a firearm by a restricted person. He was transported to the Summit County Jail without incident.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to several other calls between Monday, Dec. 11, and Sunday, Dec. 17, including reports of registration and equipment violations.
Sunday, Dec. 17
A traffic stop was initiated near a gas station in Silver Creek on a vehicle with a registration violation. Deputies noticed the smell of raw marijuana coming from inside the vehicle cabin. They searched the car and found a small amount of weed and paraphernalia. The driver was issued a citation and released.
Deputies stopped a car in Silver Creek for an equipment violation. They became suspicious the driver was under the influence of alcohol after speaking with the suspect. A drunk-driving investigation was launched and the driver was subsequently arrested. The driver was charged with DUI and an open container at the time of arrest.
Tuesday, Dec. 12
Deputies made a traffic stop in Pinebrook. A man was arrested and charged with driving without an ignition interlock system and driving on a suspended license. He was transported to the Summit County Jail without incident. The vehicle was impounded.
Monday, Dec. 11
Deputies stopped a vehicle near the Overland Trailhead for a revoked registration. The smell of raw marijuana was noticed coming from inside the car. Deputies searched the vehicle and found a small amount of weed and drug paraphernalia. The driver was issued a citation and released.
A vehicle was stopped in Silver Creek for not displaying a rear registration sticker. The driver told deputies his license was suspended. The man had an extensive criminal history related to narcotics, so deputies deployed a K9 during the traffic stop. K9 Cooper alerted to the smell of drugs and deputies launched a search of the car. They found a small amount of heroin and paraphernalia. The driver admitted the items belonged to him. He was arrested and booked into the Summit County Jail. The car was released to the man’s friend at the scene.
