The agenda packet for Wasatch County Planning Commission’s Oct. 25 meeting — which will include potential commission recommendations regarding The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Heber Valley Temple Project — is now available to the public.
Within the 390-page packet are details about the temple’s size, lighting, cooling, drainage, Federal Aviation Administration requirements and other structural aspects along with staff reports recommending the commission to take certain actions.
The Heber Valley Temple, announced by the church in October 2021, has long been the center of controversy for the surrounding community. The local group Save Wasatch Back Dark Skies has contended that the church’s efforts to amend the county’s dark skies lighting code was an overstep and the location for the building at 1400 East and Center Street on the border of Heber City and Wasatch County is not an appropriate site for the project.
Members of the community have voiced their support for and discontent with the temple in several county and Heber City meetings, and local social media groups are rife with occasionally vexed arguments about the project.
While the Planning Commission can vote on recommendations regarding the site’s plans, the Wasatch County Council will be the legislative body ultimately responsible for their approval.
