I-84 was closed to traffic headed in both directions after a semi-truck pulling a fuel tanker and trailer overturned near mile marker 117 around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, killing the driver.
According to Utah Highway Patrol public information officer Sgt. Cameron Roden, the driver lost control and the trailer started to spin. The truck overturned, and its fuel tanker became disconnected and poured its contents onto the road.
“They do have both directions of 84 closed as well as the frontage roads for that fuel spill,” Roden said. “The driver did sustain fatal injuries and died at the scene.”
Roden said the incident is still under investigation and it is currently unknown what caused the semi truck to initially lose control. The driver was not identified.
According to Capt. Tyler Rowser with the North Summit Fire District, officials are hoping to have the eastbound lanes open by 6 p.m. The westward portion of the road, he said, is likely to be closed somewhat longer.
