Fall weather has helped reduce the fire danger in Summit County. Now the rating is low.
Officials said precipitation from over the weekend and cooler temperatures throughout the Wasatch Back contributed to the decision this week. Summer conditions previously led the danger level to be raised to moderate on July 18. It was not reduced until Wednesday.
Summit County hasn’t reached a high level of danger. Storms during the summer have helped fuel sources such as vegetation retain moisture, making it harder to ignite. Native grasses at low to mid-elevations are still green.
However, several trees were struck by lightning and firefighters from across the county were called to put out the blazes. The burns that did occur in Summit County have caused minimal damage compared some in past years.
But there are still a few weeks in the state’s fire season, as it runs from June 1 to Oct. 31. Officials urge residents and visitors to practice their fire sense so they can enjoy camping and recreating this autumn.
