One man was arrested over the weekend after he fled on foot and hid in a Coalville barn from Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputies and state troopers.
Utah Highway Patrol on Sunday was pursuing the suspect eastbound on Interstate 80 when deputies were called in to help, according to a report from the Sheriff’s Office.
State troopers deployed spike strips in Coalville, which disabled the vehicle. It rolled to a stop in a gravel parking lot about a half mile from Main Street, according to the report.
The suspect started to run and he hid in a nearby barn. Deputies and state troopers established a security perimeter around the barn. Eventually, the suspect exited voluntarily. He was detained by Utah Highway Patrol without further incident.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to several other calls between Monday, Aug. 14, and Sunday, Aug. 20, including reports of vehicle burglary, juveniles with drugs and missing hikers.
Sunday, Aug. 20
Retail theft was reported at Outlets Park City. The caller said two men and a woman entered the store. The woman and one man distracted the store associates while the other man placed multiple designer-brand wallets into a bag. The trio left the store and separated. Each wallet ranged between $200-300 in price. The employees were unsure how much merchandise was taken. Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects. They planned to follow up.
A vehicle burglary occurred at Trailside Park. A window was broken and a bag containing a camera, two lenses and a wallet was taken.
Deputies responded to a second vehicle burglary at Trailside Park. A man said he and his wife’s wallets were taken. They contained approximately $200 in cash.
Saturday, Aug. 19
Summit County Search and Rescue and the Sheriff’s Office Mounted Patrol responded to a missing 14-year-old hunter in the Lyman Lake area. The boy had been missing for around four hours before he was located by a good samaritan on an ATV. He was reunited with his father.
Dispatch received a call around 4:30 a.m. from a family in Ohio who said they received an SOS alert from their brother. The man is in Utah completing a 100-mile hike. The GPS location pinged to a remote part of Duchesne County. No other messages or information was received from the man. The Utah Department of Public Safety was responding with a helicopter at shift change.
Deputies located an overdue party near Mirror Lake Highway. The father and son were in good health.
An attempt to locate was issued for a pickup truck traveling westbound on I-80. The vehicle was seen driving recklessly. The complainant advised the vehicle left the roadway and was traveling in the gore. Deputies located the car and attempted to stop the vehicle. However, the car accelerated. A short, 2-mile pursuit ensued before the driver pulled over. Deputies initiated a standardized field sobriety test, which the man performed poorly on. The driver was arrested for suspected DUI. His alcohol breath test came back .185, according to deputies. Three passengers in the vehicle were transported to a hotel in Coalville.
Friday, Aug. 18
Deputies were dispatched to a Silver Creek business for a hit-and-run. The complainant parked his vehicle and went inside the store to purchase several items. He exited around 10 to 15 minutes later and returned to his place of work. The man discovered the damage to the driver’s side of the truck then. Deputies closed the case because there were no leads or suspects to follow up with.
Three juveniles were found asleep in the South Summit High School football field announcer’s box. The underage boys had drugs and drug paraphernalia. They were released to their legal guardians. The contraband was booked into evidence to be destroyed. Deputies planned to consult the school resource officer.
Thursday, Aug. 17
A group of teens was reported missing by their mother to the U.S Forest Service. Deputies advised the woman to wait at the trailhead, but no one was there when they arrived. They later learn the woman found her children and drove home. However, she failed to inform deputies. The family was contacted at home and confirmed safe.
Wednesday, Aug. 16
Deputies were dispatched to a psychiatric report in Coalville. A suicidal man with a handgun was standing in the front yard of his mother’s home. Deputies took immediate public safety precautions and established phone contact with the man. They later met with him in person at the residence. Deputies were able to get the individual to voluntarily comply. He was then taken to a behavioral health facility.
Monday, Aug. 14
Search and Rescue and the Mounted Patrol were dispatched to the Henry Fork area for an overdue hiker and a medical call. Both incidents were active at shift change. Medical helicopters were called to assist the individuals and transport them.
A traffic stop was conducted in Kimball Junction. Deputies approached the driver and learned the individual had multiple active warrants out of Summit County. The driver was arrested and transported to the jail.
Deputies made contact with a suspicious vehicle in Jeremy Ranch. The car was parked near dumpsters at a gas station after business hours. The driver displayed signs of impairment while speaking with deputies. The individual performed poorly on a field sobriety test and was arrested for suspected DUI.
