Cars compete in the mini car division at the Summit County Fair Demolition Derby in Coalville, Saturday, August 3, 2019.

The Summit County Fair returns from Aug. 5-12 to its grounds in Coalville. Christening opening day is a much-anticipated Demolition Derby, scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5. The event quickly sells out to spectators most years, and this year is no different.

However, there’s still time to join the fray — sign-ups to compete remain open. Entering the event is completely free, and they even accept participants day-of.

The event will feature six heats or classes of competition: the limited weld, ’80s wire class, old iron wire class, two heats of mini cars and then the youth wire class. The limited weld event has the biggest prize: a $6,000 payout for the winner and prizes for the three runner-ups. For the other events, competitors can earn up to $3,000, with prizes for the two runner ups in each category.

Winners for the events are determined by last-man-standing — “whoever’s car can endure the most hits,” says Tyler Orgill, the events manager for the Summit County Fair. Cars and their drivers will enter the arena and smash it out until only one car is left operating.

Prizes are also given for the “Mad Dog” competitor, chosen for the car whose performance included the most heavy hits, and a Best Paint prize awarded to one car.
