Establish a cemetery in Basin
A number of years ago I was a member of the Summit County Council and we were asked by several citizens to enable a cemetery that could be available to Snyderville Basin residents. We enacted legislation to create a cemetery board and we looked at several possible locations, but we never appointed members to the board and the effort did not gain traction. I’ve heard recent rumblings of interest and think it is the right time to begin a new discussion since it’s an election year and we’re in the process of selecting a new County Manager.
Park City Cemetery only has six sites left, which are available only to those who live in town. The Snyderville Basin is home to 67 percent of the senior citizens in the greater Park City area, signaling that most senior citizens in the greater Park City area have an unmet future need for burial options within their community, recognizing that death can occur at any age. Yet, the Snyderville Basin is the only area of Summit County that doesn’t have a cemetery. Christa Cassidy, a land use professional, has had discussions with various County officials about potential site locations on County-owned land and how a cemetery would be governed and staffed. What we need your help with now is urging the County Council to appoint a Cemetery Board to determine the advisability of establishing a cemetery and develop scenarios for decision making.
