A 9-year-old boy was in critical condition after he was submerged in the Smith and Morehouse Reservoir for more than 10 minutes.
Summit County Sheriff Justin Martinez said the Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a vehicle carrying three children became immersed in the water early Monday evening. The family was unloading kayaks at the boat ramp when the truck rolled into the reservoir with the children inside.
Two of the children, another 9-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, were rescued from the vehicle. A third child, the 9-year-old boy, was underwater for more than 10 minutes before he was rescued by a kayaker. He was transported to a Salt Lake Valley hospital via medical helicopter.
The boy is in “extremely critical” condition, Martinez tweeted on Monday.
The investigation is ongoing. Martinez expected more information would be available midweek.
