A Kamas man faces multiple charges including attempted murder after, prosecutors allege, he threatened to shoot his estranged wife’s boyfriend.
Charges were filed in Summit County’s 3rd District Court on March 21 against 21-year-old Trenton Walsh, Jr. He faces one count of attempted murder, a first-degree felony; two counts of purchase, transfer, possession or use of a firearm by a restricted person, both third-degree felonies; two misdemeanor counts of possession or use of a controlled substance; and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor. Attempted murder is the most serious charge and carries a maximum penalty upon conviction of five years to life in prison.
Walsh is accused of sending his wife a text message last week requesting she give him their two daughters before he shot her boyfriend, according to court documents. Walsh and the woman are married and have two daughters together. But, they do not live together and are both in separate relationships.
Documents allege Walsh was outside of his wife’s home in Kamas when the messages were sent. Prosecutors also say Walsh’s girlfriend told police that he threatened to kill his wife’s boyfriend and threatened to run if he saw police. Walsh’s girlfriend said she tried unsuccessfully to get a gun away from him.
Deputies stopped Walsh’s vehicle in Oakley and noticed two rifles near the driver’s seat, according to a probable cause statement. One of the rifles had a bullet in the chamber and a loaded magazine. The other weapon was not loaded.
Walsh allegedly admitted to police that he had been in the parking lot of his wife’s home and sent the text messages threatening her boyfriend. Documents allege he also told deputies he had used methamphetamine.
Deputies allegedly found a pipe in the center console of the vehicle, as well as scales, marijuana and a small container holding a substance suspected to be methamphetamine.
Walsh remained in custody at the Summit County Jail as of Monday afternoon, according to Lt. Andrew Wright. His bail was set at $50,000 cash only.
