A 27-year-old Salt Lake City woman and McPolin Elementary School teacher’s aide received a 90-day jail sentence after she pled guilty to several felony crimes in connection with thefts victimizing fellow teachers in the Park City School District.
According to Summit County Prosecutor Matt Bates, Kayla D. Goodrich pled guilty to four second-degree felonies on Monday, March 3, in the Third District Court at the Summit County Justice Center.
Goodrich was sentenced to immediately serve 90 days in jail, 36 months on probation and pay a $10,000 fine.
Bates said the sentence is “fair and it was the sentence we asked for.”
“Kayla Goodrich made some huge mistakes, but took responsibility for it,” Bates said. “She had a lot of people from the community, including a couple of the victims, sending in letters on her behalf supporting her. We hope she gets the message and gets the help she needs to take care of her problem so this doesn’t happen again.”
According to court documents, on Oct. 20 a Park City School District teacher reported she had caught a woman trying to break into her home. The woman recognized Goodrich as a teacher’s aide at McPolin Elementary School.
Once deputies located Goodrich and questioned her about the incident, she admitted to burglarizing the homes of several teachers in the Park City School District and attempting to burglarize several others.
After Goodrich consented to a search of her car, deputies found a pry-bar and several prescription bottles belong to various people, the documents state. The deputies also found two black books that contained the names and addresses of employees.
Goodrich was initially charged with eight second-degree felonies and four third-degree felonies, including attempted burglary, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
She was arrested on Tuesday, Oct. 21 and posted her $94,000 bail the same day.
Goodrich’s defense attorney, Gerry D’Elia, was unavailable to comment on the case by press time.
