Dear Editor,

I am writing on behalf of Alex Butwinski, candidate for City Council.

Let me start by saying that experience really does count. Although Park City has a small western town feel, it continually faces very complicated and far-reaching issues. Those things that are so enticing to others are exactly what would be put in jeopardy if growth occurs too quickly or too haphazardly.

Before he was even elected to council, Alex became acquainted with the issues affecting Park City at the time. He then continued to, and I can testify to this, “do his homework” in order to have all possible information for making reasoned decisions on some of the extremely complex issues that Park City has faced over the past four years.

In service to the citizens of Park City, Alex worked to prevent hotel and retail development on the Triangle Parcel at Quinn’s Junction as well as mitigating the movie studio project’s impact there. As we face another summer with water use issues, let us remember that Alex was a significant participant in the Western Summit County Project. This Agreement will guarantee our water needs for the next 25 years and beyond.

He is the council liaison on boards and commissions which are charged with improving the quality of life in Park City while maintaining its unique character. He is also on two state committees which, among other objectives, serve to create a basis for respect and understanding between our city and state governments.

There is not a candidate who works harder, puts in more productive time and reasoned thought into the job of City Council member. I urge you to vote, as I will, on Aug. 13 for Alex Butwinski for City Council.

Re-elect Cindy Matsumoto

Dear Editor:

I would like to urge everyone to vote for Cindy Matsumoto for City Council. Cindy has done an outstanding job during her first term and most certainly should be reelected to a second term.

As one of the owners of Right at Home, she is a successful Park City businesswoman who has first-hand experience with the needs of the local business community. She is a long term resident who with her husband Alan has raised three wonderful daughters here in Park City so has first-hand experience with the needs of Park City residents. She was one of the driving forces behind the renovation and expansion of the award-winning Park City Museum and has been a tireless advocate of preserving, protecting and promoting our history so has on-the-job experience with the delicate balance our Historic District demands.

Cindy has a proven track record, is conscientious, spends the time necessary to research and study each issue, and is approachable. She welcomes people’s opinions and helps address their concerns.

Please vote for Cindy on August 13 or during early voting July 30th – August 9th.

Vote for Alex in upcoming primary

With the upcoming election, I thought it appropriate to submit my rare letter to the editor!

Parkites need to be aware that, because of a change in state law, Park City will be holding a Primary Election for two City Council seats on the 13th of August. Just one month from now we will vote to choose who is on the ballot in November.

This means we all need to be thinking election much earlier than normal: plan in advance to obtain absentee ballots, make sure you are registered if new to town and learn as much as you can about the candidates. Voter registration and absentee ballots information are available at the Marsac Building or online at http://www.summitcounty.org

I will be casting my ballot for Alex Butwinski. He is a proven Council Member who has accomplished significant outcomes on many critical issues that will continue to keep Park City “Park City.” We now have a water agreement that will insure our water needs for the next 25 years; a working relationship with the EPA, and funding for critical capital improvements and the purchase of more open space. This is due in part to Alex’s efforts and I applaud him for it.

I have known Alex for 22 years as a friend, a very capable partner as well as an effective, committed public servant. I truly appreciate people like Alex that commit their time and energy for the benefit of our community. It is a gift!

Please join me in supporting Alex for a second term on the Park City Council.

City to be commended for tennis program

The Trailside Recreation Center has a fresh and wonderful tennis facility.

I was honored to speak to young tennis players there and I was overjoyed to see the high quality of four courts all arranged for youngsters and adults.

Jullie Patterson, the director, with a staff of five assistants put on a first-class tennis program. I was so pleased to see the children ages around seven years of age fully engaged in learning tennis. Park City can be very proud of this facility. Since tennis is a sport for life, why not start young….?

Parade was a delight, we’ll be back

My wife and I had the pleasure of joining my daughter and her husband (Laura and Neil Johnson), residents of Park City, and his parents for several days over the July 4th week. The highlight of our trip was watching the parade in Park City although we did a lot of other things like playing golf and hiking, etc. We also attended a party before the parade and were excited to be included in the group.

What I was most impressed with was the fun everyone was having including members of the parade and all the people watching the parade. It was very apparent that the Park City residents are primarily young and physically fit. I only saw a couple of cigarette smokers and very few overweight people. I guess living in a skiing community will burn off the calories.

In any event, my wife and I departed for Florida with an excellent impression of the Park City residents and we know that our children live in a great community.
