The purpose-built dog park at Quinn’s Junction is a hike for many Parkites.

The de facto dog park on the grassy field outside the Park City Library and Education Center, however, is not nearly as far away for them.

The leash law is in effect in public places in Park City and surrounding Summit County other than official dog parks. But the library field has for years been a popular place for Parkites to allow their dogs off their leashes in violation of the leash law. The authorities have typically not enforced the leash law there.

City Hall collected a few comments about the library field from people who completed a 2012 survey about the Quinn’s Junction dog park. The people who mentioned the library field did so as they criticized the dog park at Quinn’s Junction.

The comments included:

  • “If your looking to improve the dog park please consider fencing in the unofficial dog park at the library downtown. Everyone uses that space as a dog park already and the only downside is that it isn’t fenced in. Stop improving the crappy dog park when the unofficial dog park gets much more traffic and is already highly utilized.”
  • “I think an ‘in town’ dog park is really what my husband and I, and our friends, would like to see. We live in Old Town and often bring our dog to the Library Park (which I think is still more popular than the official Dog Park) but is not ‘off-leash.'”
  • “Dogs run free at the Library, why would I go to that sorry patch called the Dog Park?”

    Park City officials have attempted to nudge dog owners who let their pets run free at the library field toward the dog park at Quinn’s Junction. They have posted a sign explaining the leash law and providing information about the dog park.
